Good morning everyone, I have often noticed that the screws in my Billy shelves become loose over time and sometimes even wear out completely. This issue seems to increase especially when the shelves are reassembled or adjusted differently, which is quite frustrating because it affects the stability. My question to you is: What can I specifically do to prevent the screws in Billy shelves from wearing out over time? Are there any special screwing techniques, additional materials, or other tips you would recommend? I am looking forward to well-informed advice or first-hand experiences so I can keep the shelves sturdy in the long run.

Avoid completely unscrewing the screws repeatedly This is an important point that is often underestimated. Repeatedly screwing in and out damages the wood’s grain structure and soon results in loose fittings.
In addition to the tips mentioned so far, I would like to point out that using plastic or metal threaded inserts can be especially effective for the side walls. These replace the wood threads and protect the material from further wear. Such inserts are now readily available for DIY enthusiasts and relatively easy to install.

Repeated screwing in and out damages the wood’s fiber structure That explains a lot, thanks! I will try to only tighten screws from now on instead of fully unscrewing them.

Installing metal threaded inserts is usually quite straightforward: you enlarge the existing hole and screw the insert into the wood using a suitable tool (e.g., a piece of a wrench or an insert key). It is important to choose the correct dimensions to ensure the insert fits precisely. Many hardware stores offer kits with instructions to help with this. This is especially worthwhile for shelves that will bear heavy loads or be frequently reconfigured.
