Hello everyone, I have relatively new Billy shelves from IKEA in my basement and have noticed a slight buildup of moisture and occasional mold spots on the back panels of the shelves as well as sometimes on the shelves themselves. My question is very specific: What is the most effective way to prevent mold growth on Billy shelves in a basement, especially when the humidity level is higher? What preventive measures have proven effective in terms of storage, air circulation, and material protection? Are there any special tricks involving treatments for the shelves or back panels? I look forward to any tips or experiences!
Thank you for the additional information on the construction aspects. I am doing the same; we are currently checking the basement waterproofing in parallel. However, short-term protective measures are important, which is why I am asking about impregnating the back panels. Does anyone have experience with common wood preservatives or sealants for Billy bookcases? Does it change the appearance or stability of the furniture? Can it be removed without leaving any residue? Thank you!
Wood preservative stains can be applied to BILLY shelves; they will cause the wood to become slightly darker or more matte, depending on the product. Water-based solutions are usually more transparent and gentler. They generally cannot be removed completely, as they penetrate deeply into the veneer. However, they improve moisture resistance, which is useful for basement storage.
One should keep in mind that the veneer on BILLY is not very thick. A heavy sealant can cause stress or small cracks to develop as the wood expands and contracts. Therefore, a thin, even layer is ideal. For long-term protection, I also recommend prioritizing improved air management within the room.
