Hello everyone, I have relatively new Billy shelves from IKEA in my basement and have noticed a slight buildup of moisture and occasional mold spots on the back panels of the shelves as well as sometimes on the shelves themselves. My question is very specific: What is the most effective way to prevent mold growth on Billy shelves in a basement, especially when the humidity level is higher? What preventive measures have proven effective in terms of storage, air circulation, and material protection? Are there any special tricks involving treatments for the shelves or back panels? I look forward to any tips or experiences!

Quick question for BODA64: Is there already any indication of the actual moisture level in your basement? A specific reading with a hygrometer would be very helpful to assess the need for further measures.

Hi CORYGAU, I currently have two measurement points showing about 70% humidity each – that is clearly too high. The basement wall itself feels slightly damp but there is no active water. We are currently discussing the next steps with a specialist company. The temporary measures are meant to help until the renovation takes place.

around 70% humidity

That is definitely within the range that promotes mold growth. A good target is below 60%. Until then, consistent ventilation and the use of dehumidifiers are essential.

Additional note: Besides humidity, temperature should also be considered. Cool wall surfaces promote condensation. Insulating the basement walls or the backs of shelves can help by increasing the surface temperature.

It is also important that the stored goods themselves do not cause an increase in moisture. Do not store damp items on the shelf, including wet shoes or textiles.

Thank you for the valuable advice! I will continue to monitor the humidity closely and prepare the shelves accordingly. The topic of insulation sounded particularly interesting; I might try using a thin insulating back panel. I will keep you updated.
