Hello everyone,
I have been having issues with the doors on my Billy shelves for some time now. They no longer close properly, often remaining slightly ajar or reopening after being closed. I have already checked that the screws are still tight, and the shelves appear to be standing straight. Unfortunately, I could not find any obvious warping or other damage.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how I can get the doors to close properly again? It would be great if the solution is not just temporary but more long-lasting. Thanks in advance!

I can understand that well; these issues can really become frustrating over time. But as others have mentioned, with a bit of patience and careful inspection, the problem is usually easy to resolve!
It’s important to really check the hinges – I often found that the screws around them were simply loose. In that case, it helps to loosen all the screws first and then tighten them firmly again.
Often, it also helps to take the doors off properly and inspect the hinges before rehanging them.
Good luck, you can do it!

I’ll quickly jump in as well!
Another point I’ve noticed with Billy shelves is that the vertical stability of the unit itself can be a factor. If the shelf isn’t perfectly level or wobbles, the doors press unevenly, which prevents them from closing neatly.
Please check with a spirit level whether the shelf is really standing straight. If not, it can help to use small leveling feet under the legs or to even out the floor with felt pads.
This can greatly improve your situation!

That sounds to me like an issue with the hinges or their alignment. The assessment is correct. I would like to add some precise steps:
1. Open the doors and check if the hinges are securely fastened. Loose screws are a common cause.
2. Use the adjustment screws on the hinges. BILLY shelves usually have 3–5 adjustment options (horizontal, vertical, depth). A slight shift can resolve many issues.
3. Verify that the shelves themselves stand on a level surface. Even a slight tilt affects door function.
4. If wood swelling is present (due to humidity), lightly sanding the contact areas is advisable.
5. If none of these steps succeed, consider replacing the hinges.
These steps should be followed systematically to find a lasting solution.
Thanks to everyone for the detailed responses!
I will start adjusting the hinges first thing tomorrow morning. The hinges are not loose, at least not visibly, but I haven’t actively used the adjustment screws so far. Retightening them seems logical now.
I will also check with a spirit level to see if I am really standing on a level floor.
I also find the tip about possible wood swelling interesting. The humidity is quite high here at the moment, so that could be the case.
I’ll get back to you once I have done more checks.

Made any progress yet? 🙂
Take your time and let us know how it goes!
It might also help, when adjusting, not just to move the small screws but to slightly lift or press the door so the hinges are not only fixed but optimally aligned.
Good luck!

A quick update from me:
Adjusting the hinges really helped! I was able to set the doors so that they now close without gaps and no longer open by themselves.
The tip about using a spirit level was also invaluable; I actually found a slight unevenness in the floor, which I have now evened out a bit with felt pads.
There might indeed have been some moisture involved as well, which I will continue to monitor.
Thanks again to everyone – your advice was perfect for addressing the problem in a structured way!
