Hello everyone, I have relatively new Billy shelves from IKEA in my basement and have noticed a slight buildup of moisture and occasional mold spots on the back panels of the shelves as well as sometimes on the shelves themselves. My question is very specific: What is the most effective way to prevent mold growth on Billy shelves in a basement, especially when the humidity level is higher? What preventive measures have proven effective in terms of storage, air circulation, and material protection? Are there any special tricks involving treatments for the shelves or back panels? I look forward to any tips or experiences!

Regularly ventilate and use a dehumidifier. BILLY wooden shelves cannot tolerate high humidity – this can quickly lead to mold.

To prevent mold growth on BILLY shelves in basements, the room humidity should be kept consistently below 60%. In addition to regular short ventilation, I recommend using hygrometers to monitor the air humidity. For further prevention, you can treat the back panels of the shelves with a water-repellent sealant and ensure that the shelves are placed at least 5 cm (2 inches) away from the wall to allow for air circulation. Shelves placed directly on the floor tend to absorb moisture. Using base plates or higher legs is advisable in this case.

Prevention is better than treatment. I also recommend not placing cardboard boxes directly on the shelves, but using breathable containers instead. Cardboard retains moisture and often contributes to mold growth, especially when filled with paper.

Treating the BILLY shelves themselves is difficult without special impregnation, as they are made of veneered particleboard. Targeted protection can be considered by applying a thin layer of clear lacquer on the back panels to reduce moisture penetration. It is also important to ventilate the shelves at least once a week – especially in the basement, where humidity is often too high.

Hey, great topic! 🙂 I had a similar issue and solved it with a small electric dehumidifier. I also treated the back wall lightly with wood preservative and placed the shelf about 10cm (4 inches) away from the wall – boom, no more mold! Just give it a try, it’s brilliant! 🙂
