Good morning everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases, which I have stacked quite high and heavily loaded. Unfortunately, they wobble noticeably when I lean on them or take something out. I have already checked that they are screwed to the wall, which they are, but the wobbling still persists. I am interested in learning what options are available to permanently fix this wobbling with heavily loaded Billy bookcases. Are there special reinforcements, additional anchors, or other tricks to improve stability? Thanks in advance for your advice!

The most important thing is that the shelf is properly attached to the wall. If it still wobbles, you should install additional angle brackets at the bottom and top. Filling empty shelf backs with plywood also adds stability.

You can also try leveling the shelf supports with small wedges. Sometimes the shelves wobble because they are not perfectly level. Additionally, check if the wall fixings are properly secured.

To stabilize heavily loaded BILLY shelves, I recommend the following: 1. Check the wall attachment and, if necessary, replace the anchors with stronger ones. 2. Attach additional braces or metal brackets to the shelf corners. 3. Install a back panel made of thin plywood or an extra MDF board to prevent lateral twisting. 4. Distribute the load as evenly as possible across all compartments, placing heavy items on the lower shelves. 5. Optional: Connect multiple shelves with screws or metal plates to reinforce the overall structure.

Thanks for the detailed list. Could you please explain a bit more about how the back panel works? I only have the original thin cardboard back panel installed, and I don’t think it adds much to the overall stability.

The original back panels are usually very thin and not very load-bearing. You can cut a thin MDF board or plywood to the size of the shelf and screw it on the inside of the back. This prevents the frame from twisting and significantly stabilizes the entire shelf.
