Good morning everyone, I have often noticed that the screws in my Billy shelves become loose over time and sometimes even wear out completely. This issue seems to increase especially when the shelves are reassembled or adjusted differently, which is quite frustrating because it affects the stability. My question to you is: What can I specifically do to prevent the screws in Billy shelves from wearing out over time? Are there any special screwing techniques, additional materials, or other tips you would recommend? I am looking forward to well-informed advice or first-hand experiences so I can keep the shelves sturdy in the long run.

Hello Hermann37! That’s a really good question, and it has happened to me quite often as well! 🙂 Usually, it helps a lot to first stabilize the screws during assembly with a bit of wood glue, so they don’t slip and stay firmly in place. Also, using thicker or longer screws can provide extra holding strength. You’ll manage it for sure, good luck with the retrofit!

Hi, I would recommend tightening the screws neither too tightly nor too loosely. Use washers if necessary to better distribute the pressure. Screws with coarse threads are also helpful.

To prevent loosened screws in Billy-style shelves, I recommend the following measures: 1. Tighten screws only with the correct torque to avoid overloading the material. 2. Use washers under the screw heads to increase the bearing surface and prevent the wood from crushing. 3. Insert knock-in nuts or metal thread inserts in the wood for reinforcement. 4. Alternatively, apply dowel glue into the drill holes before driving in the screws to secure the material against stripping. 5. Finally, regular inspection and retightening can help maintain stability.

Thanks for the tip! I’m curious whether the wood glue actually stabilizes the screws themselves or if it mainly reinforces the area around the hole? And how does it behave if you want to rebuild the shelf later on? Does everything then stick completely firmly?

Regarding Hermann37’s question: Wood glue hardens the wood around the screw holes and prevents the wood from wearing out quickly due to the screw threads. This stabilizes the screw connection without the screws themselves getting glued in place. This means the shelf can be disassembled later, although with more effort, but not impossibly so. It is advisable to use the glue sparingly and avoid letting excess glue get into the screw threads.
