Hello everyone, I am currently working on assembling a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and wondering if it is actually possible to put this shelf together securely without using screws at all.

What matters most in my question is whether connection elements like wooden dowels or similar alternatives can be used, or if the shelf is only load-bearing and stable with the screws provided.

Are there any special methods or tricks to assemble the BILLY shelf without screws – for example, by using clamp connections, special locking systems, or other solutions?

I mainly want to understand whether such an option can match the usual stability and safety of IKEA shelves, or if screws are simply indispensable here. Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

Hello Ronsan, your question is very good and important because stability is naturally crucial when it comes to furniture, especially for a shelf like BILLY, which is often loaded.

Basically, the BILLY shelf is designed so that the screws create the load-bearing connection between the side panels and the shelves. The screws ensure a firm connection.

You can use wooden dowels, and BILLY shelves sometimes include dowels in addition to screws, but dowels alone are not designed for the necessary stability.

Other options, such as snap-fit systems or clamp connections, are not officially offered for BILLY by IKEA. Of course, you can experiment, but I recommend using at least some of the screws provided, especially for the basic framework.

In my experience, you can deviate from screws if you use very precise dowels, but assembly becomes significantly more complicated, and safety is compromised. If you don’t like screws for aesthetic or other reasons, there are options like screws with concealed heads or special caps that can be fitted afterwards.

For clarification: IKEA BILLY shelves come standard with drywall screws designed to securely join particleboard.

Wooden dowels can assist in alignment during assembly but are primarily intended for positioning rather than structural strength. Without screws, there is a fundamental lack of tensile and compressive resistance.

Alternative mechanical fasteners such as connectors, mortise and tenon joints, or clips are not intended for this furniture system and are not supported by IKEA.

Due to the shelf’s construction, assembly without screws is not possible if stability and safety are to be ensured. Omitting screws will result in significant loss of stability.

In short: No, the BILLY shelf is not stable without screws. Dowels alone are not sufficient. Screws are at least needed for the basic frame.

I would like to explore this topic a bit more, as it is important to understand the load-bearing mechanisms in furniture like BILLY.

The BILLY shelf is made of particleboard panels, which are relatively thin. Screws are primarily used to secure the shelves, providing resistance to tensile and shear forces. Dowels mainly serve to ensure correct alignment and minimize rotational movement in the joints.

Attempting to assemble the shelf without screws, for example using only dowels, can cause the shelf to wobble under load or even collapse. Additionally, most dowel systems are not designed for this purpose, which reduces the overall strength.

So, if your goal is to build the shelf entirely without screws, you should either switch to a different piece of furniture with a knock-down or click-fit system, or be aware that safety and load capacity may be significantly compromised.

If the screws are bothersome, they can at least be replaced with countersunk or concealed screws, which are less visible. Using wood filler or special wood glue mixtures with the dowels is also possible, but this is more of a temporary solution and does not fully replace screws.

I would be interested to know your exact reason for wanting to avoid screws completely. That could help provide more targeted recommendations.

I’m curious—what exactly is your reason for wanting to avoid screws altogether?

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation, Surela. My motivation is mainly aesthetic, as I follow a very minimalist design approach and visible screw holes or screw heads interfere with the overall look.

Additionally, I want to be able to assemble and disassemble the shelf as cleanly as possible, since it needs to be done quickly when moving.

Therefore, I am looking for an alternative that works mostly without tools while remaining stable.

Are there connection methods that are less invasive or can be hidden? Or even plug-in system solutions compatible with IKEA BILLY that don’t compromise the basic structure?
