Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home which I regularly use for books, decorations, and sometimes heavier items. I have noticed that the shelves and back panels often lose stability over time or even start to warp.

My question is: How can I extend the lifespan of my Billy shelves so that they remain stable, sturdy, and visually appealing even after many years?

I would be very grateful for any tips and advice, especially regarding suitable care and maintenance measures, load limits, and assembly options.

Thank you in advance to everyone who shares their experiences!

Hello LAGUBE,

I know this problem all too well! I’ve had my BILLY shelves for years, and it’s really frustrating when the shelves start to sag or the stability decreases.

My advice is to always load the shelves evenly and avoid overloading them. It also helps to secure the shelves to the wall – this provides much better support and increases their lifespan.

Sometimes I wonder how long IKEA will keep this simple system unchanged, but well, for the price, it’s still alright. 🙂

Secure floors with additional reinforcement.
Do not place shelves directly next to windows (to avoid moisture).
Distribute loads evenly.

Hello LAGUBE,

You have asked an important question that concerns many users. The BILLY shelves are great basic building blocks, but over time they show weaknesses, especially with heavy loads or in damp environments.

Here are some tips to extend their lifespan:

1. Wall fixing: Always secure the shelf to the wall using the supplied bracket. This provides more stability and minimizes tilting.

2. Shelves: These are hung with steel pins that can bend over time. It is recommended to screw additional wooden strips or metal profiles underneath the shelves for reinforcement.

3. Even loading: Always place heavy items on the lower shelves and distribute the weight evenly.

4. Avoid moisture: BILLY shelves do not have a waterproof surface, so choose their location carefully.

5. Maintenance: Regularly remove dust to prevent damage caused by abrasion.

6. Try alternatives: Some users keep the BILLY carcass but replace the shelves with more stable options.

Hope this helps you!

It’s great to see so many tips coming in already! 🙂

Here’s an extra tip from me: I always put foam rubber pads under the feet of my BILLY shelves. It works wonders to prevent wobbling and also protects the floor.

And yes, definitely secure them to the wall! It feels safer and lasts much longer.

Stay with it, everyone—your shelves can do more if you take good care of them ;-)

I would like to add: If the shelves sag, you can either attach wooden battens underneath or use shelf brackets or metal supports. These significantly increase the load-bearing capacity.

Additionally, I recommend regularly checking the screws and connectors and tightening them if necessary. This greatly extends the durability.

Moisture is also an issue because the boards are not water-resistant. Therefore, BILLY shelves should ideally not be placed in damp rooms.
