Hello everyone,

Over the past few months, I have noticed several times that the assembly instructions for the Billy shelves from IKEA can be quite confusing. I’m interested to hear if others have had similar experiences and, especially, what might be causing this.

I find that the written explanations are sometimes too brief, while the illustrations don’t always clearly show the individual assembly steps. This is particularly true for the connecting hardware, where it’s often unclear which part goes where or exactly how it should be installed.

I also wonder if the instructions are used for different versions of the same shelves, which could lead to confusion. Or is it perhaps that some steps assume a certain level of prior experience with furniture assembly?

Does anyone have ideas on how IKEA could improve the instructions, or maybe even know of alternative guides that make the process easier to understand?

Looking forward to your insights!

I believe the instructions are intentionally kept general to accommodate various shelf depths and versions. That is why the specifications are missing.

Interesting point!

This could indeed be due to too minimal visualization or insufficient differentiation between versions. That makes the manual "universal," but at the expense of user-friendliness.

Also, I often find that a clear sequence for the step-by-step process is missing. Sometimes there is no clear indication that you should first sort all the parts or have special tools ready.

I believe IKEA could be more intentional in distinguishing between beginners and experienced users, perhaps offering multiple versions or additional videos.

Can anyone confirm whether the current manual also includes digital support?

Hello everyone,

I can definitely relate to this from my own experience! With furniture like Billy, which comes in various models (e.g., different heights, depths, and material finishes), it’s always a challenge to keep the instructions general enough while still being clear.

That’s true. Often, you’ll see symbols or variations in the instructions that you first need to interpret. For people with little experience assembling furniture, this can certainly cause some uncertainty.

On top of that, screws or wooden dowels are often barely named and only shown as small dots or symbols. The only solution is to carefully check all the parts and compare them with the instructions.

I would also recommend planning the shelving unit ahead of time and sorting all the parts before starting assembly. Although this sounds obvious, it saves a lot of frustration during the build.

If it helps, I’d be happy to share a few tips on particularly tricky spots.

The instructions are not confusing; you just need to look closely and be familiar with the symbols. The stability of Billy shelves largely depends on correct assembly.

Special screws or cam locks are usually clearly described—just follow the steps carefully.

The difficulties mainly arise from the following reasons:

1. Combined instructions for different versions: Billy is offered in various dimensions and colors, making the manual universal but also confusing.
2. Limited textual explanations: The manuals rely heavily on visuals without explanatory comments, which makes understanding harder for less technically experienced users.
3. Lack of explicit tool instructions: It is not always clear which tools are needed, potentially leading to unprepared situations.

One suggestion for improvement would be the implementation of model-specific manuals and digital supplements, such as short video clips for complex steps.
