Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and assemble it myself. Since I am not very experienced with DIY projects, I would like to get some tips or advice beforehand on what to pay special attention to during the assembly.

I am particularly interested in whether there are common mistakes or pitfalls to watch out for, and if there are any helpful tricks that can make the assembly easier or improve the process. It would also be useful to know if I should have specific tools ready that could facilitate the work, and if there are different models that require different assembly steps.

Who here has experience with the Billy bookshelf and can share some recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I can understand well that you want to plan everything to go as smoothly as possible. I built my Billy just last year and took my time with each step without rushing. It helped me to have someone assist me whenever possible, especially when standing it up. If you ever feel uncertain, just take a short break and carefully review the instructions again. Mistakes happen easily, but they are usually easy to fix.

Are you aware of how stable this shelf really is under load?

Thanks for the advice. Good question — I’m planning to use the shelf mainly for books and a few decorative items, nothing too heavy like tools or similar. Do you think I should still consider additional reinforcement?

A little tip from me: the screwdriver is included, but using a cordless drill will be much faster and more comfortable.

I actually have a cordless drill and was planning to use it, but I didn’t want to risk damaging anything. Maybe the tool really is helpful.

One more question: The instructions are partly textual and partly visual — how strict do you have to follow the order, or can you deviate locally if you feel there is a better way?

That is actually the typical use, so no worries. The shelf usually supports this without any problem. Still, I recommend at least using the included back panel, as it holds the side panels together and ensures stability.

Here, I would be rather cautious. The instructions are designed so that the shelf is easiest to assemble in the given order. Deviating from that can make some parts difficult or impossible to install. When in doubt, it’s better to follow the steps one by one.

When using the cordless drill, set the torque low to avoid damaging the wood. Otherwise, the assembly may feel loose later on. The dowels must fit cleanly into the drilled holes – do not force them in.

I believe that, beyond the technical details, it is important to take the time to level everything properly. Especially when the floor is not completely even, the shelf can easily end up crooked. I used small washers under the feet to compensate for this.

This way, you avoid problems later with doors or floors sticking.

Before you screw on the back panel, double-check the alignment of the side walls. If they are not evenly parallel, you will have difficulties installing the shelves later.
