Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and want to carefully disassemble my IKEA Billy bookcase to avoid any damage during transport and ensure it can be reassembled easily later. Does anyone have tips or a proven method for taking apart the Billy bookcase? I am particularly interested in which screws or connectors should be removed first, whether it’s best to take out all the shelves beforehand, and if any special tools are needed to safely remove the shelves and side panels. I would also appreciate advice on how to securely store small parts to avoid losing anything during reassembly. Thanks in advance for your experiences!
As additional information: The Billy shelf is typically connected using dowels and biscuits, and for optimal disassembly, it is crucial to slide the side panels out after removing the back panel. The back panel acts as a stiffener and is nailed in from behind.
It is important to carefully loosen the nails with a small crowbar, wedge, or hammer to avoid tearing the wood. For storing screws and small parts, labeled freezer bags fixed to a shelf plank are suitable, preventing loss and making reassembly easier.
Taking photos before disassembly and marking the boards with chalk or pencil should not be skipped to avoid confusion.

From my experience, the most important factor is a systematic approach:
1. Completely unload the furniture
2. Remove the adjustable shelves from the cabinet
3. Only remove the back panel at the end, as it stabilizes the unit
4. Use a cordless screwdriver to loosen all screws
5. Carefully remove dowels with a pointed screwdriver or chisel
6. Always store small parts in labeled containers
Following this order minimizes the risk of damage and loss. Also recommended: take photos beforehand and, if necessary, mark parts lightly with a pencil to make reassembly easier.

One small tip from me: When you remove the back panel, make a note of which side is the top edge and which is the bottom – the back panel is often cut asymmetrically. This can be annoying when reassembling otherwise.
Also, if you have time, carefully treat small areas that show splinters after disassembly with wood glue. This will make the shelf more durable afterwards.

So, besides the mandatory "carefully clear everything out" 🙂: When removing the back panel, take your time and be gentle. The nails are often very firmly fixed, and a too strong hit can damage the board. I always used a thinner screwdriver as a lever, which works better.
Great tip! I completely ignored that back then and had to spend a few minutes figuring it out during assembly 😉. Good luck!
