ᐅ Why does my Billy bookcase still wobble despite all the precautions?

I have securely attached my Billy bookshelf to the wall; all the screws are tight, the shelves are level, and the floor is even. However, it still noticeably wobbles, especially when I gently push it or place something on it. I have already tried reinforcing it with brackets and leveling the floor under the feet with felt pads. My question is: why does my Billy bookshelf continue to wobble despite all these seemingly correct measures? Are there any internal weak points or assembly details I might be overlooking? I would appreciate any suggestions or insights.

A common weak point is that the back panel is only fixed with small nails or thin material.

That is indeed often the cause. In my experience, simply replacing the thin back panel with a thicker board secured by several screws significantly reduced the wobbling.

Another tip: check if the screws holding the shelf to the wall are tightened enough. Sometimes even half a turn less can make a difference.

If you have laminate or hardwood flooring, slight unevenness can occur from gaps or joints in the subfloor, which may cause the shelf to vibrate. A foam-like underlay or rubber pads under the feet can work wonders here.

Did you assemble the shelf completely yourself? If so, screws or connections might also be slightly loose.

Possibly fix the shelf at two wall points, not just at the top. More contact points significantly reduce wobbling.

One point I often see is moving a shelf afterward without re-securing it to the wall. For example, if you have shifted your Billy shelf, the back panel may become stressed or small gaps may appear.

The screws in the back panel can also loosen easily if the shelf has been moved, so make sure to tighten them and, if necessary, secure them with multipurpose adhesive.

It is also important not to overload the shelf too much on one side, as this can cause warping, which will then result in wobbling.

Please also describe exactly how you attached the shelf to the wall (number and position of screws, wall material).

That’s a good question. Details such as the wall material and the exact mounting method can be very important.

I remember that Billy shelves recommend only two screws, which is often not enough for larger or taller models. Using three or four screws provides a noticeably more secure attachment to the wall.

Even when screwing into drywall, you should aim for metal studs or anchored wood; otherwise, simple wall plugs can quickly become loose.

Thanks for the helpful tips so far!

I mounted the shelf on an interior solid brick wall using two screws, one at the top left and one at the top right. The anchors are traditional plastic TX sleeves. The back panel doesn’t appear warped; it sits evenly all around and is nailed in place. The feet rest flat on a tiled floor, which I leveled out with small wooden shims.

I find the suggestion to use more than two screws for wall mounting or to add internal brackets interesting – I could easily do that.

I will also try tightening the screws to see if that improves the situation.

One more question: Could changes in humidity cause the shelf to expand and occasionally become a bit looser?
