ᐅ Attaching a Kallax shelf as a TV stand to the wall—how stable is it?

Hello everyone, I’m considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf unit as a TV stand, but I don’t want to just place it loosely against the wall. My idea is to securely fix the shelf to the back wall of my living room to ensure more stability and prevent it from tipping over. My question is: how stable is a Kallax when attached to the wall? Is fastening it to the wall enough to safely and securely hold heavier items like a television and some decorations without the risk of tipping? Or would it be better to consider additional reinforcements or a different construction? Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

I can definitely understand how important stability is to you. I once underestimated how easily a shelf can tip over, and that was quite unsettling.

What I learned from that is that simply attaching it to the back panel is often not enough. Sometimes it helps to also secure the shelf at floor level or press it firmly against the wall, especially with larger models.

If you have pets or children, I would really recommend not relying solely on fixing it to the back panel, but securing it at several points for safety. The concern is understandable, especially when the unit is fully loaded and even has a TV on top.

It is true that the Kallax furniture is not designed for high point loads or strong leverage stresses. However, with proper wall mounting, it can support significantly more than you might initially expect.

A solid mounting surface is important: solid walls are ideal, and for drywall, appropriate hollow wall anchors or an alternative should be used, otherwise the mounting will not be reliable.

Additionally, I recommend placing the TV as centrally as possible on the shelf to distribute the load evenly. If you are somewhat handy, an extra reinforcement panel attached to the inside of the back panel can further increase stability.

I understand well how important this topic is. I also had concerns about using my Kallax as a TV stand and ended up securing it to the wall with two metal brackets at the top.

After that, I felt much more relaxed because there was no more wobbling, and the TV stands securely. However, I am increasingly careful not to overload the shelf to prevent any deformation.

It simply feels safer when the shelf is fixed in two places rather than just standing there.

Is wall mounting the back of the Kallax shelf sufficient to make it stable and secure against tipping even with heavier items?

From my experience: yes, it is enough if the mounting is done properly.

In addition to the previous posts: A well-executed wall mounting using metal brackets is the best method to secure a Kallax shelf against tipping. The anchors and screws used must be suitable for the wall type. Furthermore, the maximum load capacity per Kallax compartment should not be exceeded.

Regarding the TV weight: An 18 kg (40 lb) TV is within a moderate range if it is placed securely on a level surface that does not sag. If any signs of deformation occur, adding an extra panel beneath the TV area can help.

Finally, check the fastenings again after some time to ensure they remain tight, as screws can sometimes loosen under heavy load.

Thank you very much for the detailed and helpful answers!

Clear plan for me: I will secure the Kallax to the wall with at least two sturdy brackets, make sure to use high-quality anchors suitable for my masonry wall, and position the TV as centrally as possible. I’ll keep the idea of reinforcing the inside of the shelf as an option in mind.

Also use a safety strap (anti-tip strap) for households with children or pets.

That’s a very good tip—I have two cats and would definitely use one to be extra safe.

Does anyone have advice on the ideal screw length and diameter for the shelf? Thanks!
