Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookshelf with doors that, after a while, tend to tilt on their own, so they no longer close straight but hang slightly crooked. Does anyone have experience with reinforcing or stabilizing the doors on this type of shelf to keep them straight for a long time? I suspect it has to do with the door hinge mechanism or the material, but I would prefer not to just buy new hinges without a well-founded solution. Are there any affordable tips or modifications for a lasting result?
The BILLY series and its doors tend to sag over time, especially if the load is not evenly distributed. The issue usually lies with the hinges, which can loosen due to the weight of the door or incorrect installation. A simple way to reinforce the doors is to apply self-adhesive metal or plastic strips to the inside surfaces, which significantly increase the stability of thin door panels. Alternatively, stronger or soft-close hinges can be used, as they can withstand more pressure and allow less play.
I would recommend first thoroughly checking the hinges to ensure they are securely fastened. Often, the problem is simply that the screws have loosened over time, causing the doors to sag. If tightening the screws does not resolve the issue, a small piece of wood or a thin metal plate on the inside of the door can help to improve stability. Additionally, maintaining proper moisture balance is important, as wood can otherwise warp.

It is interesting that stiffening is mentioned right away. I would like to point out that the cause should always be analyzed first before adding any material. The doors may be leaning because the hinges are not installed precisely or because the shelf itself is not perfectly plumb. Without accurate measurements, any stiffening or reinforcement project might just be a patch-up. Has anyone measured whether the doors or the shelf are truly vertical?
