Hello everyone, I am considering which IKEA Billy bookcase would be best suited for an office. My focus is on functionality, storage capacity, and stability, as I want to store both file folders and some decorative items. It would be great if it were also flexible and adjustable, as space is somewhat limited and I occasionally like to rearrange. Does anyone here know the different versions of the BILLY bookcase and can share from experience which works particularly well in an office? Any information on dimensions, load capacity, and assembly would also be appreciated!
Good morning! I would like to add: For heavier loads, you can reinforce the shelves with wooden strips underneath to increase their load-bearing capacity. Some users here in the forum have done this.
It is also advisable to regularly check if the back panel is still securely fixed, as it significantly contributes to the stability.
If someone wants to use the shelving unit as a room divider in the office, make sure it is properly anchored to the wall; otherwise, it might tip over.

For small and medium offices, especially home offices, BILLY is a real all-rounder!I see that you feel that way, but I wonder if the basic structure and material quality are truly sufficient for long-term office use.
Anyone who works a lot every day and moves many heavy files should consider whether a more robust system might make more sense. Perhaps BILLY is ideal for starting out, but it could potentially become a weak point in the long run.
Don’t worry, the BILLY shelves last a long time if you take good care of them 🙂
Of course, other systems are better suited for industrial heavy-duty storage, but for offices, IKEA’s BILLY offers the perfect compromise. You can even replace and upgrade the shelves, which supports long-term use.

Thank you for the many different opinions!
My conclusion: For my office, I will choose the 80x28x202 cm (31½x11x79½ in) shelving unit with many adjustable shelves, secure it firmly to the wall, and possibly add doors. Flexible use with smaller shelves as an addition seems practical to rearrange if needed.
The tips about load capacity, wall mounting, and the idea of using accessories like lighting strips were especially helpful.
Do you have any recommendations for alternative products if BILLY doesn’t fit? Or is that unusual in a thread like this? 😉

Do you have any tips for alternative products in case BILLY doesn’t fit after all?Of course, naturally! For alternatives, I would recommend professional office furniture from manufacturers that offer sturdy steel or wooden shelves with modular components.
But if you want to stick with IKEA, also check out the BESTÅ system, which is visually more modern and often more stable.
