Hello everyone, I am considering which IKEA Billy bookcase would be best suited for an office. My focus is on functionality, storage capacity, and stability, as I want to store both file folders and some decorative items. It would be great if it were also flexible and adjustable, as space is somewhat limited and I occasionally like to rearrange. Does anyone here know the different versions of the BILLY bookcase and can share from experience which works particularly well in an office? Any information on dimensions, load capacity, and assembly would also be appreciated!

The shelves of the Billy unit can support approximately 15 kg (33 lbs) when the load is evenly distributed. Combining the shelves into L-shaped configurations is possible through screw connections on the sides, but this is not officially supported by IKEA. For stable corners, it is better to use corner shelves or a combination of BILLY and other systems.
If you want to use BILLY smartly in the office, it’s worth experimenting with a few extras – like LED light strips or small boxes as organizers. It improves visibility and instantly makes the workspace feel cozier. 🙂

So if you need optimal storage space and frequently work with files, it’s better to look into professional shelving systems like those from Hettich, USM, or industrial storage solutions. BILLY is only ideal if you prioritize design and flexibility, not just load capacity.

But for small to medium offices, especially home offices, BILLY is a real all-rounder! Personally, I think the combination of storage space, price, and easy adaptability is hard to beat. 🙂
