Hello everyone, I am considering which IKEA Billy bookcase would be best suited for an office. My focus is on functionality, storage capacity, and stability, as I want to store both file folders and some decorative items. It would be great if it were also flexible and adjustable, as space is somewhat limited and I occasionally like to rearrange. Does anyone here know the different versions of the BILLY bookcase and can share from experience which works particularly well in an office? Any information on dimensions, load capacity, and assembly would also be appreciated!

Interesting question! Honestly, I think many people get caught up in the standard BILLY discussion and don’t realize that there are different depths and heights available. Just because one shelf looks like another doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for the office.

Exactly, especially for flexible use, the narrower versions are often better. The wider shelves are stable but can be impractical in small offices. My theory: it’s better to have several smaller BILLY units side by side rather than one XXL shelf. They can then be cut or rearranged more easily.

For the office, I recommend the BILLY shelf measuring 40cm x 28cm x 106cm (16 inches x 11 inches x 42 inches). It fits into almost any corner, is sturdy enough for file folders, and is affordable. Optional additional shelves are recommended for storing documents.

Hi kodan, I work a lot with IKEA office furniture and can confirm that the 40x28x202 cm (16x11x79 inches) model with extra shelves is really very flexible.

The shelving unit is tall enough to store binders comfortably while not being too bulky. Important: Make sure to secure it properly to the wall, especially in offices with children or customer traffic – safety comes first!

I totally agree, especially if you plan to expand in the future.

BILLY is simply great for offices! 🙂 I have two shelves (40x28x106 cm (16x11x42 inches) and the classic 80x28x202 cm (31x11x79 inches)) in my home office and I’m really happy with them! They are very sturdy, offer plenty of space, and you can do so much with them.

The great thing is that you can add doors to the shelves to, for example, hide electronics or personal documents. It makes the office look much tidier! 🙂

I want to make a case against choosing dimensions based purely on size. It's true that a depth of 40cm (16 inches) is more practical for small offices – but stability also suffers as a result.

Pay attention to the wall anchoring

That’s exactly my point. Without wall fixing, I wouldn’t recommend any BILLY-style design for filing because the risk of tipping increases the taller and narrower the shelf is.

Furthermore, the maximum load capacity per shelf is also crucial. Depending on what and how much you store, a shelf unit 80cm (31 inches) wide with 5 shelves can be more economical than several smaller units.
