Hello everyone, I am planning to get new Billy shelves from IKEA and want to pay particular attention to the maximum load capacity. My specific question is: Which versions or models of the BILLY shelves have the highest load capacity per shelf, and are there differences between the various materials (wood, metal, etc.)? I am looking for shelves that can hold heavy books, so this is a crucial factor for me. Perhaps someone here has practical experience or can share technical data on this. Thanks in advance for your answers!

Good question, I’m interested in that too because I constantly load my shelves to the limit and often feel unsure if they can still hold up. I’ve heard that shelves with glass shelves can carry less weight, which makes sense. Maybe metal shelving units are more stable? My advice: if you’re placing heavy books, it’s better to use several small shelves rather than a few large ones, and definitely make sure the shelves are properly leveled. Sometimes reinforcing the shelves on the wall helps as well. What have your experiences been so far?

The standard BILLY shelves with wooden boards support about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf according to the manufacturer. Metal shelves usually support less. Check the product description on IKEA’s website, as it usually specifies the exact load capacity.

Just to double-check: the official limit of 30 kg per shelf seems very general to me. How much weight a shelf can actually hold depends not only on the material but also on the load distribution, the wall mounting, and the overall height and width. I would like to see if there are load-specific measurements or tests available. Has anyone asked about this in more detail at the trade fair or through IKEA support?

I wouldn’t accept that without evidence. Metal alone doesn’t necessarily mean greater load capacity. The design and material thickness are crucial.

For clarity: IKEA’s BILLY shelves with standard wooden shelves are advertised with a load capacity of approximately 30 kilograms (66 pounds) per shelf, evenly distributed. The version with glass shelves has a lower load capacity, about 15 kg (33 pounds) per shelf.

Proper wall fixing is also important, as the shelves can easily bend or the unit can tip over otherwise. Due to the relatively thin material thickness, BILLY shelves are only conditionally suitable for heavy loads.

Those who require significantly higher load capacities should consider modular or more professional shelving systems.

Additionally: IKEA also offers the BILLY Oxberg variant, featuring adjustable shelves made from more durable materials. These shelves can reportedly hold slightly more weight, around 40 kg (88 lbs) per shelf. According to IKEA’s datasheet, they are somewhat harder to find but are generally considered more stable based on experience.
