ᐅ Is it possible to replace existing doors in a Billy shelf unit with softer ones?

FUTISONHello everyone,
I am considering replacing the existing doors on my Billy bookshelf with softer, meaning more gently closing doors. Specifically, I want to know if this is technically possible without much effort or having to make adjustments to the hinges or door size. My goal is to achieve a smoother, softer closing motion so that the doors don’t slam and perhaps close more quietly. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on what to pay attention to? I’m unsure about what alternatives for doors are available and whether dimensions or material thickness play a role. Thanks in advance!

whether this is technically possible without major effort or adjustments to the hinges and door size. This depends heavily on your Billy model. If you have the classic bookshelf with simple metal hinges, compatibility is questionable. Softer doors often have damped or soft-close fittings that are not easily adapted. Have you already checked which hinges are installed exactly and whether they can be replaced at all?
Great idea to upgrade the shelf! 🙂 I tried this with my Billy, but I only replaced the hinges with soft-close ones. It worked perfectly, the doors no longer slam shut! If you want to replace the doors, you need to pay close attention to the measurements. Looking forward to hearing how you proceed!
I really like the idea; it makes the Billy much more homely! 😄 I’ve personally installed soft-close hinges before, which is a really simple solution if you don’t want new doors. Replacing doors can be tricky, especially with the hinge holes – you have to be careful, or you might end up with holes in the wrong spot. But hey, if you’re handy, it’s a great project! 🙂

I would also recommend replacing the hinges first rather than the entire doors – this causes less effort and is gentler on the materials. However, if the appearance of the door is important to you, replacing the door could make sense, but please measure carefully in that case.
