Hello to all woodworking enthusiasts!

Since I will soon be purchasing a new kitchen and the budget has already been heavily stretched by the house construction, I am asking for your help. My idea is to buy the cabinet boxes for the kitchen from IKEA. However, only the basic units with the drawers but without fronts. This is also because my wife cannot accept any “IKEA fronts.”

What bothers us a lot is the white melamine edging on the cabinets, which would contrast unattractively with the planned dark fronts. Now to my main question: Is it possible and reasonable to remove the white edges (planing, routing, cutting) and glue on a 1mm ABS edge band? Or does this not make sense overall (considering labor time and material costs)? Some additional custom elements will need to be made anyway because they are not available from IKEA. I have heard repeatedly from carpenters that they buy the cabinet boxes from IKEA and modify them. Others do not like this method at all and build the cabinet boxes entirely themselves. By the way, my workshop is fully equipped (including an edge banding machine), so technically it is no problem. So many questions – maybe you could help me clarify my doubts and give me some tips.

Thanks in advance!

I think your idea to modify the IKEA units is great. Custom work just takes patience.. 🙂 And it seems you are very skilled with handiwork. Personally, I would tape everything off and spray paint, because I would be too lazy otherwise.. 🙂

What does your kitchen look like? Did everything go smoothly? Are there any photos? I’m interested, as I’m planning something similar.
Best regards
