Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my kitchen using the Ikea Metod cabinets and am looking for tips on creating a modular and flexible design. Specifically, I want to understand how to combine the different modules in a way that allows for adjustments later on—such as rearrangements, expansions, or adding new features (e.g., additional appliances or storage solutions).
I am especially interested in how to make good use of the basic elements, which cabinet widths are recommended, and what to keep in mind when planning the layout to avoid running into limitations when making changes down the line.
If anyone has experience with different fronts or interior fittings that add flexibility, I would really appreciate well-founded advice and examples, as well as pointers on common mistakes in modular planning.
Thank you in advance!

Cabinet fronts can be replaced later if the style changes. This is a very important point for modular use. Separating the carcass (Metod cabinets) and fronts allows for kitchen modernization without a complete replacement.
Additionally, I recommend focusing on standardized module widths and heights during planning to avoid compatibility issues with accessories and appliances. Although custom sizes are possible, they significantly reduce flexibility.
Finally, the stability of the construction should not be underestimated. Sometimes less is more: fewer modules that are robust and well-made lead to fewer problems in the long run.
I planned the Metod kitchen myself two years ago and would like to share some practical insights:
The biggest challenges were accurately matching the room dimensions and considering all connection points. What helped a lot was first planning the modules roughly and then going through everything in great detail either in the store or using the online planner.
Regarding your question about flexible design: thanks to the modular setup, you can relatively easily remove individual cabinets or swap them for others. Just make sure the countertop is also modular or can be adjusted later on.
One more tip: when working with base and wall cabinets, pay attention to having a consistent countertop height. Different heights can make rearranging more difficult.

Consider which interior fittings you will need before placing your order (e.g., cutlery trays, shelves, pull-outs).This planning is essential for flexibility and everyday usability. Many people underestimate the importance of well-thought-out interior organization with Metod.
It is worthwhile to structure the cabinet contents in advance based on your cooking and usage habits. Although the modularity of Metod allows retrofitting, the earlier you consider these details in the planner, the less frustration you will have after installation.
Regarding appliance integration, it is also helpful to know the exact dimensions. It is recommended to consult the installation manuals and manufacturers’ specifications for this.
