Hello everyone, I am currently planning to equip my kitchen with Ikea Metod cabinets and am considering adding soft-close drawers to significantly increase comfort. Since I want to assemble the cabinets myself, I am especially interested in how complex the installation of the soft-close mechanism for Metod really is, whether there are any special tools or tricks to be aware of, and if anyone can share from experience how durable this mechanism is in daily use. Are there any tips for aligning the drawers so that the soft-close works perfectly, or common mistakes to avoid? I want to prevent having to constantly readjust after installation or getting annoyed by squeaking or sticking drawers. Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

Hello sonnu, I have assembled several Metod cabinets with soft-close drawers myself and can share some advice. In general, installing the soft-close mechanism in the Metod systems is quite straightforward, as IKEA already provides some pre-assembled components. It is important that you align all parts exactly according to the instructions – I recommend having a spirit level and a ruler on hand.

A common pitfall is inaccurately inserting the drawer runners into the cabinet carcass, which can later cause issues with proper closing. You can also fine-tune the damping mechanism afterwards if the drawer closes too quickly or too slowly.

Regarding tools: a good cordless drill with the appropriate bits is essential, and a small rubber mallet can be helpful if you need to gently tap components into place. When fitting the soft-close systems, the drawer should initially sit loosely in the runners before you fully screw everything together.

As for durability, the IKEA soft-close mechanism is sturdy when installed carefully, but you should avoid excessive force when closing to prevent premature wear of the dampers. What does your kitchen look like—multi-row cabinets or rather individual modules? Then I can offer more specialized tips.

For the installation of the soft-close drawers, be sure to align the drawer slides precisely. Screw the dampers firmly, but not too tight, otherwise they will not work properly. Tools: cordless drill, screwdriver, possibly rubber mallet.

Make sure to precisely align the drawer slides when installing soft-close drawers.

Exactly, aligning the drawer slides is crucial. If the slides are not installed accurately, the soft-close mechanism often feels stiff or squeaks. It helps to fully open and close the drawer several times after installation to break in the system.

About a month ago, I upgraded my Metod drawers to soft-close myself and was really surprised at how smoothly everything operates! Installing them was a bit nerve-wracking, but with calm and patience, the result turned out great. Tip: Always make sure the screws are tight to prevent any wobbling later on. I’m telling you, with soft-close, the kitchen feels much more upscale compared to drawers that just slam shut! 🙂

I think it’s worth considering the durability of the soft-close system. IKEA uses plastic dampers here, which are quite smooth, but over time they can wear out. You should therefore check whether you might want to consider spare parts or alternative dampers if you are looking for long-term quality.

Also: Are you sure the cabinet boxes are positioned exactly at the right angle? Even small deviations can negatively affect the soft-close function and are difficult to adjust later. If the furniture is uneven or crooked, you should counteract this with shims or adjustable feet.
