RomanpuHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA METOD kitchen and would like to know which tools, based on your experience, are truly essential for assembly.
I am particularly interested in which aids, besides the basic screwdriver and hammer, really help save assembly time and prevent mistakes.
Are there any special tools you would recommend? It would also be helpful to know which tools should not be skipped, as their absence makes the assembly unnecessarily complicated.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I also recommend using a spirit level to ensure the cabinets are properly aligned – this saves a lot of hassle later when fitting the fronts.
It’s great that this topic is coming up. To clarify Romanpu’s question: In addition to a cordless screwdriver and a spirit level, I also recommend a tape measure for precise measurements. Tools like a small hammer and possibly a rubber mallet are useful for adjusting fasteners without damaging surfaces.
If you plan to install the countertop separately, a drill with the appropriate bit is important.
A small tip: IKEA usually includes the essential screwdriver bits, but mark the one you find most comfortable – it will save you time.

Especially with materials like particleboard used in the METOD cabinets, I want to avoid screws being driven too deep or too loose.

Is there any recommendation for a specific spirit level, or is a basic one from the hardware store good enough? Accuracy seems quite important.
I have divided the setup into several categories to make the selection easier:
- Basic tools: cordless drill/driver (with adjustable torque), measuring tape, spirit level
- Impact tools: rubber mallet, small hammer
- Precision tools: various screwdriver bits, possibly hex keys (for fasteners as specified in the instructions)
- Additional helpers: clamps can be useful if you need to hold parts in place
Regarding the spirit level: A simple level up to 60 cm (24 inches) in length is usually sufficient; the most important feature is an easy-to-read bubble vial. Expensive tools offer little added value for such a straightforward assembly.
When choosing cordless drill/drivers, make sure it has fine torque adjustment, especially for the METOD system, to avoid damaging the material.
My final tip: A small workbench or a clean surface makes handling the modules much easier.
