Hello everyone, I am planning to retrofit my existing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close drawers and then install them professionally. Specifically, I want to know which retrofit kits for soft-close are recommended, what special considerations should be taken into account when removing and installing the drawers, and whether it is better to use IKEA’s mechanisms or possibly compatible third-party options. I am also interested in how much effort the conversion typically requires and if any additional tools might be needed. Has anyone had experience with this or can provide advice on the best approach—especially regarding the fit and durability of retrofitted soft-close systems?

I retrofitted my Metod cabinets with the original IKEA soft-close runners. Simply remove the old runners, install the new soft-close runners, and adjust them. It is important to align the drawer precisely; otherwise, the soft-close function will not work properly. Tools needed: screwdriver and possibly a drill for minor adjustments.

To fully understand retrofitting soft-close mechanisms in IKEA Metod cabinets, I recommend the following approach: First, carefully identify the existing drawer slides (model number, weight capacity). Some older slides are not compatible with soft-close systems, meaning a complete replacement is necessary. Installing the soft-close rails usually involves snap-in mechanisms that require precise alignment within a few millimeters.

Additionally, it is important to note that IKEA uses the BLUM TANDEM-BOX systems, which differ from those of third-party suppliers. Third-party options can sometimes offer more affordable solutions, but fitting issues may arise, especially if the drawer sides have varying thicknesses.

Helpful tools include a caliper (vernier caliper), a cordless drill with adjustable torque control, and a spirit level. The conversion, depending on the cabinet size, takes between 30 and 60 minutes per drawer.

I would like to know whether the drawers you want to retrofit are mounted on side-mounted or under-mounted slides. Do you have details on this?

Thanks for asking! My Metod cabinets are the standard version with side-mounted metal slides. The drawers are 60cm (24 inches) wide and about 40cm (16 inches) deep. The existing slides are not soft-close but simple ball-bearing runners. My main concern is whether I can just order a retrofit kit for these specific slides from IKEA or if I should look at third-party suppliers who might offer better quality or easier installation.

For side metal drawers from Metod, you can use the IKEA soft-close retrofit kits. They are compatible and quite easy to install. Third-party options sometimes offer better dampers, but the fit is often problematic.

Retrofitting soft-close drawers on IKEA Metod cabinets is generally quite feasible, but there are a few important points to keep in mind:

- Carefully remove the old drawer slides and set them aside in case you want to reuse them or keep them as replacements.
- IKEA offers specific soft-close mechanisms for Metod (for example, the Maximera soft-close model) that are easy to install.
- Make sure the slides are correctly aligned, as improper alignment can cause unwanted scraping or noise.
- When installing, be sure to readjust the drawer fronts, since the mechanism can slightly affect the overall fit and geometry.

I recommend starting with one drawer and then gradually retrofitting the others. If you need help with the adjustments, I’d be happy to explain in more detail.
