Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to combine IKEA Metod cabinets with drawers in my new kitchen and have some questions. Specifically, I want to know how to best combine different drawer modules within the Metod system to ensure both functionality and appearance are optimal.
For example, I am interested in whether it is practical to install drawers of different heights (e.g., shallow and deeper drawers) side by side, and what to consider when connecting cabinets of different widths.
Are there also any practical tips for mounting the drawers as securely as possible and is there any accessory available to better organize the drawers?
Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

Basically, the IKEA Metod system is modular and allows you to combine different drawer heights and cabinet widths.
It is important to use cabinets with the same carcass dimensions (e.g., 40cm (16 inches), 60cm (24 inches) width) since the fronts and drawer slides depend on these measurements. It is not a problem to install drawers of different heights in adjacent cabinets.
Points to note:
- Connecting fittings ensure stable joints between modules.
- Full-extension drawer slides make usage easier, especially for deep drawers.
- Internal drawers or organizers can be added to improve order and visibility.
Assembly instructions and accessories from IKEA provide clear guidelines.

I can clearly understand that combining the Metod cabinets with drawers can seem a bit tricky. I spent a lot of time thinking it through myself and was initially unsure whether everything would fit together well in the end.
My advice: First, plan carefully on paper or using a design tool to determine the exact measurements you need. Especially with different drawer heights, it’s worth visualizing the cabinets to assess the overall look.
I also found organizing the drawers challenging, but with the right inserts, I was able to find a neat solution for every storage space. I feel that investing some time here really pays off in terms of functionality.
Looking forward to hearing more opinions!

From my perspective, it is important to clarify which front styles you want to use before purchasing, as these can affect the width of the drawer fronts.
Although the Metod cabinets are modular, when combining drawers of different heights, there are sometimes filler strips or panels that you should plan for to achieve a seamless appearance.
Regarding stability, the original connecting fittings from IKEA are sufficient; however, it is advisable to tighten all screws securely and assemble the cabinets on a level surface.
For organization, systems such as cutlery inserts or additional storage boxes are compatible. This way, you can create order with minimal effort.

Thanks for the helpful answers so far!
A quick question: Kieran mentioned that “connector fittings provide stable connections between the modules.” I’m wondering if these fittings are also extra sturdy when combining cabinets with different depths, for example, a 60 cm (24 inch) deep cabinet next to a 40 cm (16 inch) cabinet that is only 37 cm (15 inch) deep?
Or is that potentially problematic? I want to avoid the cabinets shifting against each other when the drawers are used or becoming loose over time.
Does anyone have practical experience with this?
