Hello everyone, I am planning to customize my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to make better use of storage space and improve their functionality. I am particularly interested in additional shelves, interior drawers, and options for attaching accessories such as LED strips or doors with special handles. I would like to know which upgrades you have already tried, how to keep the cabinets stable when modifying the interior, and whether there are any recommended third-party suppliers that offer compatible extensions. I would greatly appreciate any tips on installation, material quality, and potential pitfalls!

For additional interior drawers, simply use the appropriate Metod drawer inserts, which usually fit well. You can attach LED strips with self-adhesive tape, but make sure to have proper wiring. There are third-party options available, but most of the time the IKEA original is more affordable.

Great idea to personalize your Metod cabinets! 🙂 I have installed LED strips myself, and the atmosphere in the kitchen is now fantastic. My tip: Don’t hesitate to make small drill holes to securely attach accessories! You’ll see, it’s really fun and adds a lot of convenience!

An important aspect when retrofitting Metod cabinets is the weight distribution. Additional shelves or drawers should not overload the original brackets and screws, as this can affect stability. I recommend using sturdy brackets and, if necessary, reinforcing with aluminum profiles. Another option is to use screwable T-connector angles for increased strength.

Hello Lias48, your question is very precise, thank you for that! Regarding the individual retrofitting of IKEA Metod cabinets, it can be said that the system is quite modular and many accessories are specifically designed for retrofitting. It is important first to know the exact internal dimensions of the cabinet in order to properly fit suitable additional elements. For example, you can use extra shelves that can either be hung in place or securely screwed in—make sure to follow the recommended hole spacing. Internal drawers and small pull-out compartments are very useful for keeping things organized. For tips on installing LED strips, I recommend focusing on how to hide the cables and establish a reliable power supply, possibly with a transformer placed in a corner. Third-party suppliers sometimes offer practical additions such as special organizers that can connect to the holes of the Metod modules. If you want to replace doors or fronts, you can look for conversion kits that offer taller handle options or soft-close features. Always ensure compatibility with the original parts in all your work, as this will extend durability. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I also find the topic of retrofitting really interesting. I experimented a bit in my kitchen and realized that sometimes it’s useful to use the inside of cabinet doors for extra storage, for example with small hooks or magnetic holders. This provides additional storage space when floor area is limited. I know you’re probably worried about drilling mistakes, but with some patience, it can be done successfully. Every change comes with its own small challenges, but I think that’s what makes the process truly engaging.
