Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my kitchen using the Ikea Metod cabinets and am looking for tips on creating a modular and flexible design. Specifically, I want to understand how to combine the different modules in a way that allows for adjustments later on—such as rearrangements, expansions, or adding new features (e.g., additional appliances or storage solutions).

I am especially interested in how to make good use of the basic elements, which cabinet widths are recommended, and what to keep in mind when planning the layout to avoid running into limitations when making changes down the line.

If anyone has experience with different fronts or interior fittings that add flexibility, I would really appreciate well-founded advice and examples, as well as pointers on common mistakes in modular planning.

Thank you in advance!

Basically, the modular design of Ikea Metod is a major advantage, as cabinet widths of 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm (8, 16, 24, and 32 inches) allow for great flexibility in adapting to different room layouts. An important planning detail is to avoid fragmenting the modules too much, as this quickly becomes impractical.

- Recommendation: Primarily use 40 and 60 cm (16 and 24 inches) wide cabinets as the basic framework.
- For corners and base cabinets, special corner solutions are suitable to optimize space.

Additionally, you should plan for future expansions, for example by leaving room for tall cabinets that you can add later.

Be sure to observe the maximum load limits of the drawer units and install the cabinets according to the instructions to ensure long-lasting enjoyment of your kitchen.

I would always work with the standard sizes of 40 and 60 cm (16 and 24 inches). This way, you stay flexible.

Front panels can be replaced later if the style changes.

And plan carefully to keep an eye on electrical outlets and water connections.

I can only confirm that. For flexibility, it is especially helpful to choose a clear structure with these standard dimensions during planning, as IKEA designs most accessories to fit exactly these sizes.

One additional tip: The internal organization with drawers or baskets in the Metod system is very versatile; I have had good experiences with the Effektiv system. This allows for customized storage division and makes it easier to adapt later to new needs.

The option to simply swap fronts also strongly supports the modular concept. This makes sense, especially for long-term planning, to remain visually flexible.

Hello pemeo,

I would like to add a brief step-by-step guide for modular planning of the Metod cabinets to my post:

1. Measure the room: Create an accurate sketch including dimensions, doors, windows, and utility connections.

2. Choose the base units: Mainly use 40 & 60 cm (16 & 24 inch) cabinets, as these combine well.

3. Plan the base cabinets:
- Ensure work surfaces remain aligned.
- Place frequently used storage at convenient heights.

4. Add tall cabinets:
- Consider appliance integration like ovens and refrigerators.
- Cabinets with adjustable internal drawers offer better flexibility.

5. Accessories and interior fittings:
- Plan with adjustable organizing accessories (dividers, pull-outs).

Common mistakes:

- Using too many very small modules, which reduces stability.
- Insufficient clearance around utility connections.

Conclusion: The strength of Metod lies in combining standard modules. Once the basic structure is established, you can adjust the interior organization and fronts at any time.

One important aspect I would like to add is Ikea’s own planning software (Planner). It shows exactly how the system works in detail.

The modularity is especially supported by the plug-in connections and the construction. For maximum flexibility, you should align the height of the cabinets, especially the base cabinets, with the countertop.

Also: Think about which interior fittings you need before ordering (e.g., cutlery trays, shelves, drawers). Although these can be swapped later, the standard depth and height of the cabinets already determine the options in advance.
