Lumeo45Hello everyone,
I recently installed several Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with white fronts and want to prevent the fronts from changing color or yellowing over time due to UV light, dirt, or other environmental factors. Therefore, my question is: what methods or products are most effective for protecting Ikea Metod fronts from color changes?
I am particularly interested in practical recommendations regarding sealants, cleaning products, regular maintenance routines, and possible protective films or paints.
Has anyone here had experience with what works well in everyday use, especially considering the material properties of the Metod fronts (melamine-coated chipboard, lacquered, etc.)?
I look forward to your tips and advice, including any warnings about potential mistakes or products to avoid.

Hello Lumeo45,
I completely understand your concern. The Ikea Metod fronts are often coated with melamine or lacquered, which protects them against moisture and light dirt, but prolonged exposure to UV radiation and chemical substances can cause discoloration over time.
For protection, I recommend:
- Avoiding direct contact with strong cleaning agents.
- Never scrubbing the fronts to prevent damaging the surface.
- Using transparent UV protective films on windows or curtains to reduce direct sunlight exposure on the fronts.
- Considering aftercare with special furniture or lacquer protection products suitable for melamine-coated surfaces.
I would advise against products containing aggressive solvents or strong alcohol, as they can damage the surface. Cleaning with a damp cloth and mild dish soap is usually sufficient.

In my experience, it also makes sense not only to clean the fronts but to give them some regular “care” by checking the surrounding conditions—such as humidity, windows, and UV exposure. If the room gets a lot of sunlight, it can become really frustrating when the fronts start to yellow.
I have also considered having a thin protective film applied, but sometimes the appearance can be a drawback. The question is whether anyone here has long-term experience with such films or protective coatings that don’t yellow and don’t make the surface look dull.

Hello everyone,
I would like to add a brief note: The Metod fronts come in different materials – melamine-coated panels, foil-covered, or painted fronts. These react differently to care and protection measures.
- Melamine: Very resistant to moisture but sensitive to light. UV exposure can cause color changes.
- Painted fronts are more prone to scratches but are better sealed for protection.
My recommendation:
- For melamine-coated fronts, regular cleaning with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner is sufficient.
- Protection from direct sunlight using curtains or UV window films is very effective.
- For smooth painted fronts, polishing with special furniture care products can help maintain the paint layer.
Regarding protective coatings and sealants: Be careful! There are no clear coats available for purchase that are guaranteed to be compatible with IKEA materials. Testing on an inconspicuous area is essential.
