Dear community,

I recently installed a kitchen with IKEA Metod countertops and I’m wondering how to best protect them from discoloration. The countertops have a light wood finish, and I have read that they can darken or develop stains over time due to sunlight exposure, moisture, or certain cleaning products.

I am especially interested in which protection methods or maintenance products you would recommend to help the countertops retain their color and appearance for as long as possible. Are there specific sealants, oils, or impregnating treatments that work well without damaging the surface?

I would really appreciate practical tips, experiences, and also warnings about potential pitfalls to watch out for when protecting Metod countertops. Thanks in advance!

Hey heide66, great that you’re looking into this topic so thoroughly! 🙂

I have Metod worktops made of light wood myself, and I can only recommend treating them with a good wood oil right after installation. This soaks in, protects against moisture, and minimizes color changes caused by UV exposure!

It’s important to use a high-quality oil suitable for kitchen countertops—some are too thin and don’t provide enough protection.

Also, make sure to maintain the worktops regularly afterwards, not just apply the oil once. This way, the surface keeps its natural color for much longer.

Good luck, you’ve got this!

You should protect Metod panels with a suitable wood oil that is approved for countertops.

Avoid harsh cleaners and standing water. It is best to wipe immediately.

I often find these oils to be overrated. If you don't damage your countertop, constant oiling isn’t necessary. Sure, a few drops of water are a no-go—but I doubt that oil can work miracles against UV discoloration.

Why not simply install UV protection film on the windows? I think that’s more effective in the long term.

That’s an interesting point, Connor. Since my kitchen faces south, UV radiation is indeed a factor that likely has a strong impact on color changes.

Although I had mainly considered a surface treatment, UV protective window films are actually an option I haven’t seriously thought about before.

Does anyone have experience with both methods – maintenance oil versus UV protective films – and whether they can be combined? Are there any disadvantages to doing so? Thanks!

UV-protection films are definitely an effective measure against color changes caused by sunlight. They provide long-term protection, especially for light wood surfaces.

However, they do not replace protection against moisture and dirt. Therefore, I recommend combining a UV-protection film on the window with regular treatment of the Metod panel using a suitable wood oil or sealant.

It is important that the oils used are appropriate for kitchen surfaces and do not leave any residues that could be harmful.

Additionally, care should be taken to avoid using harsh or alkaline cleaners that can roughen or discolor the surface.
