Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen unit, but there is a particular challenge: the walls in my kitchen are floor-to-ceiling height, about 2.80 meters (9 feet 2 inches), most likely a bit higher than typical standard ceilings. My question to you is how to best adapt the Metod cabinets to this tall wall? Are there any recommendations for installation, adding extension panels, or even modifications to use or close the gap between the cabinets and the ceiling effectively? I am especially interested in whether it’s possible to use special IKEA accessories or if it’s smarter to make custom adjustments myself. I look forward to your experiences and tips so that I can achieve this as space-saving, stable, and visually appealing as possible. Thanks in advance!

Hello Pifeka, thank you for your detailed question! High ceiling walls are indeed a challenge, especially when using standard Metod cabinets designed for 2.36 meters (7 feet 9 inches) in height. Here are a few recommendations from my experience:

- Use IKEA installation strips (also called front panels or cover panels) that can be added on top of the standard height. This way, you can visually and functionally close the gaps at the upper side.
- If you have a gap under the ceiling, consider installing shelves or closed cabinet elements, which you can either close with doors or leave open.
- Pay special attention to securing the cabinets well to the wall, as the increased height adds more weight and leverage.
- You might consider extending the modules by adding a base or top element in between.

Alternatively, you can consider creative remodeling solutions, such as a wall paneling that reaches up to the ceiling, into which the cabinets are integrated. IKEA itself offers few parts for extra height, but with some DIY skills, there is a lot you can do.

I hope this helps as a starting point. Feel free to ask if you need more detailed information on any of the points!

Metod cabinets are designed for a ceiling height of 236 cm (93 inches). For a height of 280 cm (110 inches), you will need extension strips or a ceiling panel cover. Make sure to secure the wall properly!

Exactly, that’s what I was getting at. It’s easy to underestimate how important stability is with taller cabinets or extensions, especially if you want to reach all the way up to the ceiling.

If you want to reduce the gap to the ceiling, buy the upper finishing trims from IKEA and install them on top. Alternatively, you can cut and paint simple wooden panels. Important: Screw them in place to prevent any wobbling.

Thanks already for the initial tips! I’m wondering if anyone has experience with how the additional weight load affects standard wall brackets when installing extra trim or cabinet toppers above. My wall is made of solid masonry, so that should be fine. But what about the screws and mounting brackets? Do you need special heavy-duty anchors, or are the normal Metod brackets from IKEA sufficient? The doors definitely need to remain fully functional—nothing should rub or catch when opening.
