Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Hemnes dresser, specifically with stubborn stains on the surface. It is a white lacquer finish, and recently some stains have appeared that I couldn’t remove with regular cleaning products. These include grease stains, water marks that seem burnt in, and some light ink or marker stains. I have already tried cleaning with mild dish soap and some vinegar water, but the stains just won’t come off, and I’m worried about damaging or discoloring the lacquer layer. My question to you is: what is the best way to remove such stubborn stains from Ikea Hemnes furniture with a white lacquer finish without damaging the surface? Are there any special methods or products you can recommend? I look forward to your experiences and tips.

I’ve had great results with a gentle, non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner for grease stains.

Thanks for the tip! What do you mean by a 'gentle' all-purpose cleaner? Are you referring to a specific brand or ingredient?

sounds interesting. Would the paste also work on dried water stains? Or is it more suitable for surface discoloration only?

I’m a bit unsure about using alcohol since I don’t want to damage the finish. Is there perhaps a gentler alternative you could recommend?

I can only confirm the baking soda paste. Mix water and baking soda in an approximate ratio of 1:2 to create a slightly creamy paste. Apply with a soft cloth and rub gently at most. This method is especially ideal for water stains and light discolorations.

I recommend using alcohol cautiously: always apply with a cotton swab and avoid applying it over large areas. However, it can help with pen marks.

I have some reservations about using isopropyl alcohol, as it can damage the paint coating if used frequently or improperly. Was the finish on the Ikea furniture specifically stated to be alcohol-resistant? I suggest checking the material data sheets for the Hemnes furniture first before using any potentially harmful substances. Alternatively, you could try removing organic stains with a mildly alkaline cleaner, such as a gentle soap-based product.

Are there any care instructions available for the Ikea furniture?

For reference: Ikea Hemnes furniture is generally coated with a white lacquer on fiberboard. This lacquer is sensitive to aggressive solvents and strong acids.

Stubborn water stains are best treated with a neutral, mild cleaning paste, such as a baking soda paste, as it acts gently like a mild abrasive.

Grease stains can often be removed with a grease-cutting but non-aggressive dish soap, preferably applied with a soft cloth and lukewarm water.

For paint stains, alcohol can damage the lacquer. In this case, a delicate mechanical removal using an eraser or special erasers (e.g., a "Magic Eraser") is recommended, but due to the mechanical stress, it should be used with caution.

Use an eraser and magic eraser very carefully and only in small, targeted areas; otherwise, dull spots may occur. Always test first.

Good question! I recommend common household cleaners without abrasives or strong acids, such as a mild dishwashing detergent or cleaners like 'Frosch' or 'Ecover'. These are usually easy to dose and are less harsh on the finish.

is also great, as I’ve already mentioned! And regarding concerns about alcohol: yes, always use it carefully and only locally with a cotton pad or swab.

We can do this! 💪
