Years ago, I bought an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture – specifically a chest of drawers – and although I have taken good care of it, it now looks somewhat worn. I would like to know how to make the IKEA Hemnes look like new again after years of use. What maintenance methods, repair techniques, or possibly special cleaning products are recommended to refresh the surface and wood texture? Are there any preventive measures that can help protect the furniture from aging faster? I appreciate any explanations and tips, as I want to preserve the piece as long as possible and avoid having to replace it.
First, about maintenance:
- Remove dust daily or at least weekly using a dry, soft cloth
- Treat stains immediately with some water and mild soap
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or alcohol, as these can damage the surface
If the wood has become dull, it is recommended to lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper, grit 220 or higher, then apply a suitable wood lacquer or wood oil finish. Pay attention to the product specifications to ensure compatibility with the original HEMNES surface.
For treatment, special furniture polish oil or transparent furniture wax can be used, which also moisturizes and masks micro-scratches.

The IKEA HEMNES series is usually finished with a white lacquer. This is a matte acrylic lacquer on wood. This means: sanding is possible, but since the lacquer layer is thin, avoid sanding too much. It is best to use mild cleaning agents and occasionally reapply with acrylic lacquer-like products.
If you suspect the wood is more raw, oil would be more suitable, but this is rarely the case with HEMNES.
