Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture and want to find out which care products are particularly suitable for it. Since Hemnes is usually made from solid pine wood and coated with a lacquer or often a white or dark stain, I am especially interested in how to protect and maintain the surface over time without it becoming dull or stained. Which products do you trust for cleaning, for repairing minor scratches or blemishes? And are there any natural or homemade remedies that have proven effective? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hey Nosufe, great that you’re asking! 😀 I love my HEMNES furniture and have had some really good experiences with it. My top tip is to use mild soap solutions with warm water – this cleans the surface thoroughly without dulling it. Even better: follow up by wiping with a soft cotton cloth to remove any standing water. For maintenance, I prefer applying furniture wax or specialized wood care oils (make sure to check if they’re suitable for stained or lacquered wood!) – these restore the shine and protect against scratches. So definitely avoid harsh cleaners, as they can seriously damage the surface! You should definitely give it a try, you’ll be impressed!!

Briefly: Use a damp cloth with mild soap, then wipe dry. For scratches, use furniture polish or beeswax. Avoid ammonia and abrasive cleaners.

Hello Nosufe, to clarify the topic a bit more: The HEMNES series is made of solid pine wood with either a lacquer or special stains – this requires careful maintenance, as both the wood and the protective finish are sensitive. For cleaning, it is recommended to use pH-neutral cleaners, since alkaline or acidic cleaners (e.g., ammonia or vinegar) can break down the lacquer layer and eventually make the surface rough. Abrasive cleaners should also be avoided because they can scratch the finish.

For maintenance, I use oils specifically suited for wood care, such as a clear beeswax combined with linseed oil, which soaks in easily and protects without leaving a film residue. I apply it in small sections to ensure an even result.

In addition, for minor scratches, I would recommend a touch-up with a matching lacquer or a color-matched touch-up pen to keep the protective layer intact.

I am curious about the type of lacquer or stain your furniture has, as some finishes are easier to maintain than others. Is the surface more matte or glossy?

In general, the rule is: minimal moisture, regular cleaning with mild products, and occasional application of maintenance oil – this way, the HEMNES will stay beautiful for a long time.

An important aspect of maintaining HEMNES furniture is to avoid standing moisture. Wood is sensitive to this, and even if the surface is coated, prolonged exposure to water can cause discoloration or swelling.

I also recommend not applying care products too frequently or in excessive amounts – too much oil or wax can easily create sticky surfaces that attract dust and dirt.

Microfiber cloths are also suitable for cleaning, as they gently clean without scratching.

For scratches, light sanding with very fine sandpaper (grit 400 or higher) followed by touch-up treatment with an appropriate lacquer pen often helps – this keeps the furniture looking good without major repairs.

Hello Nosufe, I would like to add a few basic tips based on my many years of experience with solid wood care.

The furniture from the IKEA HEMNES series often comes with a finish that is similar to a combination of stain and clear lacquer. Therefore, it is important to use gentle substances for maintenance.

- Cleaning: Lukewarm water with a mild dish soap is best; harsh solvents like alcohol or cleaners containing ammonia should never be used.
- Care: After cleaning, I recommend applying a wood care cream or a special furniture wax. These products create a protective layer while allowing the surface to breathe.
- Repairing small scratches: Minor signs of wear can be well hidden with color-matched wax sticks or wood touch-up markers.

Please also keep in mind that no permanent sources of moisture, such as hot cups or watering cans, should be placed directly on the surface. Always use a coaster or felt pad.

I hope these tips help you!
