Hello everyone, I’m currently planning some DIY upgrades for my Ikea Hemnes furniture and wanted to ask the community: What types of do-it-yourself modifications or improvements work especially well with the classic Hemnes pieces? I’m particularly interested in ideas that emphasize the traditional Scandinavian style while enhancing the furniture’s functionality and appearance without losing its original character. Perhaps you have experience with custom paint finishes, new hardware, built-in lighting, shelf inserts, or creative handle designs? I look forward to your tips and suggestions, including examples of what has worked well or what might be less suitable.
Your approach to maintaining the Scandinavian style is important – many upgrades can quickly appear too modern or out of place if this is not considered. I would recommend:
- Replacing the original handles with brass or copper fittings, which add a subtle vintage touch.
- Using white or light chalk paint to enhance the matte finish, but all surfaces should be thoroughly sanded beforehand.
- Installing LED strips under shelves for indirect lighting – ideal for display cabinets or open compartments.
- Swapping wooden knobs for ones made of different materials, such as ceramic or a combination of wood and ceramic.
These upgrades are feasible but require care to ensure the piece does not lose its value.

It is important that the screw spacing of the new handles corresponds to that of the original handles to ensure easy installation.
Furthermore, functionality can be enhanced by gluing storage inserts made of bamboo or metal into drawers. Only the use of overly bright colors or unusually shaped handles is less suitable for this style.

I think the whole DIY hype around Ikea furniture is somewhat overrated. Hemnes furniture is popular precisely because of its simple style. If you change it too much, it loses all its charm. Instead, it’s better to work with decorations that can be replaced. Why always cover everything up and paint it?
