zacharia6410 Jun 2020 08:43Hello everyone,
I am planning to move an IKEA Hemnes sideboard at home and want to ensure the transport is as safe as possible. Since the piece is mostly made of wood and some fittings don’t seem very sturdy, I’m wondering what to pay special attention to when transporting the IKEA Hemnes.
Specifically, I’m interested in:
- What is the best way to disassemble the furniture if I want to take it apart?
- Which parts are particularly delicate or should be given extra protection?
- Are there any experiences with transporting it in a car trunk versus a van?
- Do you have any tips to avoid scratches or damage during transport?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello,
I’d like to give you a brief overview of how to best prepare the transport of the IKEA HEMNES:
1. Complete disassembly: Remove all the largest components (front, side panels, shelves). This reduces the volume and protects the surface.
2. Packaging: Use blankets or bubble wrap. It is especially important to protect the edges, as they are often the first to get damaged.
3. Screws and accessories: Collect all small parts in zip-lock bags, label them, and keep them safe.
4. Transport method: In a car, always lay the parts flat to prevent warping. A van is better suited due to its larger cargo space.
A common mistake is trying to transport the furniture fully assembled. This increases the risk of damage and makes transport much more difficult.
In summary: disassembly, careful packaging, and careful transport are essential.

Regarding the back panel, I would like to add that many IKEA furniture pieces, including HEMNES, have a thin MDF back panel. While it is sufficiently stable once assembled, it is very sensitive to pressure and impacts.
Therefore, I recommend:
- Carefully remove the back panel and transport it flat between two padded surfaces.
- Do not place heavy objects on it.
Additionally:
When packing, protect the edges with foam or old blankets. This simple step helps to prevent scratches and chipping.
Another tip: Before transport, remove the cabinet doors and possibly shelves to avoid damage caused by shifting.

I last transported my HEMNES wardrobe in the trunk, fully disassembled with all its parts. It was important to me that nothing was rattling around loose. So I made sure everything was well padded, wrapped in blankets, and the screws kept in small bags. It actually went quite smoothly.
Note: Less weight and more planning = less stress during transport. Next time, I’ll still prefer using a van, even if I can fit everything in the trunk.
