Hello everyone, I bought the IKEA Hemnes shelf for my balcony and would like to use it there permanently. Since it is made of solid wood, I am concerned about its weather resistance. To protect it from rain, UV rays, and moisture, I have a few questions. For example: Which specific sealants or varnishes are best suited for outdoor use? Should I treat the furniture with wood oil or wood stain to protect it from moisture? Is it advisable to cover the piece with a tarp or some kind of shelter? Or would it be enough to bring the shelf indoors during severe weather? I would appreciate practical tips that also consider the properties of pine wood. My goal is to preserve the functionality and appearance of the HEMNES furniture for as long as possible. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Hello Teono,
to protect IKEA HEMNES furniture made of pine wood for outdoor use, thorough treatment is essential because untreated wood is quickly damaged by moisture and UV radiation. The first step is choosing the right product:

- Wood oil penetrates deeply into the wood, nourishes it, and provides some water resistance; however, its long-term UV protection is limited. Therefore, it is only partially sufficient.
- Wood stain, on the other hand, forms a protective layer and offers both moisture and UV protection. Pigmented stains are preferable as they protect the wood from color fading.

Before treating the furniture, you should sand it well to create a clean surface for optimal adhesion of the stain or oil. It is also important that the wood is completely dry to prevent mold growth later on.

Then apply several thin layers, sanding lightly in between, as this achieves the best protective effect.

A waterproof, breathable wood varnish could also be an alternative, but often the natural appearance suffers somewhat.

Regarding location: a covered balcony or a shelter can help reduce damage from rain. Bringing the furniture fully indoors is the safest option, but often not practical.

How large is your balcony, and is the furniture permanently exposed to direct weather conditions? In a protected area, proper treatment is often sufficient.

I recommend coating the HEMNES with a weather-resistant wood stain and covering it with a tarp during heavy rain. Ideally, it should be placed in a covered spot on the balcony.

That’s an important point! I would add that it’s crucial to pay close attention to the product’s breathability level so the wood can "breathe." Non-breathable finishes can trap moisture inside the wood and push it inward, which over time can cause cracking and warping.

In addition, I have personally had good experiences with linseed oil-based wood oils that are low in odor and, when applied multiple times, provide quite good protection without fully sealing the wood.

Another tip: try to place the piece of furniture slightly elevated (for example, on spacers) to prevent water from accumulating underneath the shelf and to allow air circulation from below. This is especially important on balconies, where moisture can rise from the floor.

How is the intended use planned? Will the shelf remain outdoors permanently or only seasonally? And is it placed on concrete, tiles, or wooden decking?

Pine wood is quite sensitive to moisture because it is porous and resin-rich. Therefore, a weather-resistant protective finish is essential. When using wood oil, make sure that the oil is specifically designed for outdoor use and does not contain solvents that can excessively dry out the wood.

In addition to treating the wood with protective products, it is advisable to bring the furniture indoors during winter or periods of extended non-use whenever possible. If that is not feasible, at least use a breathable cover.

Finally, regularly check the wood for signs of rot or cracking and renew the protective coating as needed to prevent long-term damage. This will help maintain both the appearance and functionality, so the furniture can be enjoyed longer in the garden or on the balcony.
