Hello everyone, I am currently considering purchasing a piece of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series, specifically one of the more well-known wardrobes or dressers. My main question to the community is: How long does an Ikea HEMNES piece typically last with normal use in a private household?

I am particularly interested in the average lifespan in years, assuming the furniture is used regularly—meaning it does not experience excessive stress but must withstand everyday use. Are there specific factors that noticeably affect durability, such as material quality, assembly, or placement?

I would also appreciate it if you could share any experiences with repairs or the general condition after several years. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello Losehau,

regarding your question: Ikea HEMNES furniture usually lasts between 10 and 15 years with proper use, often even longer. This is because the HEMNES series is made of solid pine wood, which generally offers good durability.

Proper assembly is important, as furniture tends to become wobbly or loose if screws and fasteners are not tightened carefully – this significantly affects its lifespan. Additionally, solid wood reacts to moisture and temperature changes, which can cause deformation over time. Therefore, a dry room without extreme fluctuations is recommended.

Load also plays a role: if you place heavy items in the cabinet beyond its rated capacity or frequently rearrange, the furniture will wear out faster. Overall, I would say 10+ years is realistic if the furniture is properly maintained and handled with care.

I can confirm the statements made by LENNAU. The HEMNES series primarily uses solid pine wood, which is durable but also susceptible to moisture and mechanical stress.

Studies and reports on solid wood furniture indicate that with average use and proper care, a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years can be expected.

One factor that is often underestimated is the quality of assembly: on one hand, precise assembly enhances stability, but on the other hand, improperly screwed joints can lead to premature material wear.

In summary, I recommend paying attention to correct assembly when purchasing and regularly checking the furniture for loose connections.

Additionally, I would like to point out the impact of surface treatment. Ikea HEMNES furniture is usually either oiled or lacquered, which protects the surface.

Regular re-oiling or maintenance of the surfaces can extend their lifespan by preventing moisture from penetrating the wood and stopping small scratches from becoming entry points for water.

The construction itself is relatively simple, which makes repairs easier. Even if individual components like drawer slides or fittings need to be replaced, this is usually straightforward. This further increases the overall durability, as it allows the furniture to have a second life.

I have been using a HEMNES dresser myself for nearly 12 years. The quality is very good for the price.

What I have noticed: The furniture pieces are quite sturdy but, as is typical with solid wood, they develop minor signs of wear and color changes over the years.

It is advisable not to place the furniture too close to radiators or windows with direct sunlight to avoid wood warping and discoloration. These environmental factors affect the durability more than the structural stability.

A HEMNES piece lasts at least 10 years without any issues for me. Just assemble it carefully and avoid moisture, and it will be fine.
