Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen and have chosen the IKEA Metod system because I really appreciate its flexibility. However, instead of closed upper cabinets, I want to create an open shelving solution to achieve a more modern, airy look. My question to the community is: What is the best way to build an IKEA Metod kitchen with open shelving? Specifically, I’m interested in tips on shelf stability, suitable materials, and mounting options to ensure that the open solution not only looks good but is also durable and functional. Additionally, are there any special considerations when planning the base cabinets if the upper cabinets are partially or completely replaced by open shelves? I appreciate any advice!

Are you planning to hang the shelves on the Metod supports or mount them separately on the wall?

That’s an interesting question, which I’d like to explain: The Metod metal supports are primarily designed for closed cabinets, not for heavily loaded open shelves. If the shelves are hung on these supports, the weight distribution along the support rails is especially important. I would recommend additionally securing the open shelves directly to the wall with sturdy wall brackets to prevent twisting.

Another tip is to reinforce the shelves with a metal bar or wooden strip underneath the board to reduce sagging.

Finally, if open shelves are mounted too high, they become inconvenient to use – a height of 140 to 160 cm (55 to 63 inches) from the floor is often easily accessible.

If you want, I can gladly create a checklist for assembly and material selection for you.

That would be great, thank you!

Do you already have a floor plan? How much space do you have available?

My room measures 3.5 m (11.5 ft) wide with a ceiling height of about 2.7 m (8.9 ft), so it’s rather compact. I don’t want to use the entire width for shelves, more like a tiered setup with base cabinets and then open shelves up to a maximum height of 2 m (6.6 ft). I was thinking of shelves with a depth of 30 cm (12 inches), mainly for glasses and cookbooks. Stability and a clean installation are extremely important to me, as the shelves should also be load-bearing.

I tend to want to integrate them as much as possible, meaning to hang them on the Metod frames so the system is not visually disrupted too much, but if it’s more stable, I will install additional brackets on the wall.

Thanks already for all the ideas – any further suggestions are welcome!
