Hello everyone, I am planning to furnish my small kitchen with IKEA Metod cabinets but am unsure how to achieve the best ergonomic setup. I am particularly interested in tips on how to organize work surfaces efficiently in limited space, and whether there are specific cabinet combinations or built-in options that help protect the back and maintain freedom of movement. Also, any advice on maximizing storage so that frequently used items are always within easy reach would be great. I want to avoid constantly bending down or stretching too far. Does anyone have experience with this or can offer concrete recommendations on how to arrange the Metod system as ergonomically as possible in small rooms?

Frequent tools and items should be stored in easily accessible base cabinets with drawers to help prevent back pain caused by bending or lifting from low positions.

That sounds reasonable. But what about tall wall cabinets? My kitchen is very narrow, yet there is a lot of storage space above. Wouldn’t tall wall cabinets actually worsen ergonomics since I’d have to stretch constantly?

Regarding your question about tall wall cabinets: especially in small kitchens, it is best to avoid placing them too high to keep them accessible. Ideally, the bottom shelf should be around eye level, so you don’t have to stretch excessively. Often, a combination of wall cabinets and open shelves is a practical solution to keep frequently used items within easy reach. It is also advisable to store heavy objects near the floor to make lifting easier. Additionally, make sure that the overall limited legroom does not restrict your range of movement.

That’s completely understandable. In very narrow kitchens, I would recommend against installing wall cabinets too high. Instead, you can place the less frequently used items in the higher storage areas. For kitchen tools or utensils you use often, lower cabinets or shelves are much more practical. A small but effective tip is to keep foldable or pull-out step stools handy—this allows you to reach higher compartments without overstretching. It’s worth carefully considering how often you actually use certain storage spaces.

Another point regarding the ergonomic use of small kitchens with Metod: make the most of vertical surfaces, such as magnetic strips or hooks, to keep utensils within easy reach. Cabinet interiors that can be adjusted in height offer great flexibility to adapt to your needs. This has a particularly positive impact on workflow and comfort in small kitchens. Organizing cabinets based on how often you use their contents is also crucial to avoid frequent awkward positions.

Exactly, I agree with that. Another tip: For small kitchens, Metod also offers shallower tall cabinets with a depth of 60cm (24 inches), which can be used as a display or organization cabinet. It’s worth combining these with illuminated shelves, as this improves ergonomics by enhancing visibility. This way, you won’t miss any handles and can protect your eyes and posture.
