Hello everyone, I am planning to mount my Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall soon, but I have some concerns about load capacity and the correct mounting method. The drywall panels are 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) thick and installed on a wooden stud wall. My main question is: which wall plugs and screws are recommended for this combination, and how can I ensure the cabinets are securely and permanently fixed without damaging the wall? Are there any special tips or installation tricks to keep in mind with drywall, especially for relatively heavy kitchen cabinets like Metod? Thanks in advance for your experiences!

You should definitely use toggle bolts or metal anchors, as they provide good load distribution in drywall. It is best to choose screws with a diameter of at least 6mm (1/4 inch) and fasten them into the studs behind. This prevents the load from acting solely on the drywall panel.

I would recommend first carefully checking the spot on the wall where the wooden studs are located, and then attaching the wall cabinets directly there using long chipboard screws. Drywall alone is not reliable enough to support the heavy cabinets.

I’m familiar with the concern that drywall won’t hold. I’ve had the same problem and was unsure how to do it properly without causing damage. For me, it’s always important to transfer the load to the studs, not the panels. Back then, I also used special metal toggle anchors, which made everything more stable. It’s normal to think about these things, as it provides peace of mind.

Oh yes, Metod wall cabinets and drywall — that’s definitely a combination that needs careful consideration! 😅 If you want the cabinets to be really secure, I would definitely target the wooden studs. It’s best to locate the exact spots first with a small nail or something similar, so you can drill precisely. And if you’re thinking about the appearance as well as stability: it’s smart to keep the screw heads as inconspicuous as possible. With drywall, adding a small reinforcement on the inside using a strip of OSB panels can also help if you want to be absolutely sure.

Metod wall cabinets must be firmly attached to the studs. For drywall, hollow wall anchors are only suitable for light loads. For heavy kitchen cabinets, toggle bolts are the minimum requirement, but it is better to screw directly into the wood studs.
