Hello everyone,
I am planning to mount IKEA Metod wall cabinets on a drywall system. The wall consists of standard gypsum plasterboard panels with the usual metal stud framework. I am wondering which fixing options are sensible and secure to ensure the cabinets are not only load-bearing but also permanently stable. Are there any special anchors or mounting methods you would recommend? I am also interested in whether it is better to drill directly into the metal studs or if another option is preferable. Any advice on weight distribution and the correct procedure for drilling would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello,
for drywall, I highly recommend using special metal drywall anchors. Regular plastic anchors usually do not hold. It is best to locate the metal studs behind the board and screw directly into them. If they are not in the right place, use a combination of cavity anchors.

Hello kenpau,
here is a simple step-by-step guide on how I attach IKEA Metod wall cabinets to drywall (plasterboard):
- First, locate the metal studs behind the drywall, for example with a detector that can also detect metal.
- Ideally, the cabinets should be mounted directly to these studs, as they provide the most support.
- Use self-tapping metal screws (e.g., 4.2 x 25 mm (approximately 0.17 x 1 inch)) to fasten into the studs.
- If the studs are not exactly where the cabinets need to be hung, cavity metal anchors (e.g., Molly bolts) can be used.
- Ensure the fastening points are evenly distributed so the load is not concentrated in one spot.
- Before drilling, mark the height and alignment of the cabinet and transfer the hole pattern of the IKEA hanging system.
A common mistake is drilling only into the drywall without using cavity anchors—which means nothing holds securely.

Just so you know: drywall alone doesn’t support much weight; the key is really to hit the metal studs. And another tip: when drilling, avoid being too aggressive, or you might damage the drywall—better to proceed gently and carefully. Good luck with your project!
