zakariaHello everyone, I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen in my home. I have some questions regarding the attachment of the kitchen cabinets to different types of walls. I have a load-bearing concrete wall as well as an older interior wall made of bricks in one area, which is non-load-bearing. My main question is: How can I securely fix the cabinets of the Metod series to these different wall types so that they hold properly and no damage occurs over time due to incorrect installation? Which anchors or screws are recommended, and are there any common mistakes to avoid when mounting on, for example, older brick walls or drywall? I look forward to your practical tips and explanations, preferably from personal experience, as I want a strong and durable installation.
For the secure installation of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on different wall types, the wall construction is the primary factor. For load-bearing concrete walls, heavy-duty anchors such as sleeve anchors or wedge anchors, combined with appropriate screws that can safely support loads over 50 kg (110 lbs), are recommended. For brick walls, it is important to use anchors matched to the cavity and material density; cavity anchors or specialized expansion anchors provide better load distribution. Drywall (plasterboard) walls should only be loaded with special drywall anchors (toggle anchors, metal anchors, or cavity anchors), as regular screws or anchors exceed the load capacity and can cause damage quickly. For all types, ensure precise alignment of the cabinets and observe the maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer. For older buildings, an additional focus should be on checking stability and possibly constructing an extra solid substructure.
Super exciting project! I installed a Metod kitchen on a wall made of old bricks myself – and honestly, if you use the right anchors, it works perfectly! 🙂 For brick walls, I would always recommend cavity anchors; they provide really strong support. And if you are dealing with drywall, definitely avoid regular anchors, or everything will come crashing down! Keep it up, this is going to be awesome!
I completely understand how important secure installation is to you, especially with different types of walls. When I installed my Metod system, I was initially concerned about the brick wall as well. I think it’s crucial to take your time and really focus on using the right wall plugs and screws. If anything is unclear, it’s better to measure and check everything again. It also helped me to inspect the wall more closely—older walls can sometimes be a bit unstable. Maybe you could also get a second opinion before drilling the first holes?
