Hello everyone,
I am currently faced with the task of designing and building a complete Ikea Metod kitchen myself, but I have a relatively limited budget. My question is: How can I most effectively plan and carry out a self-built Ikea Metod kitchen on a tight budget without compromising too much on quality, functionality, or appearance?
I am especially interested in tips on selecting the components, potential savings with cabinets or fronts, alternatives for accessories, ways to avoid unnecessary extra purchases, as well as experiences with assembly and installation.
I look forward to your advice, including practical examples! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your assessments and tips so far!
In summary, I notice:
- Priority for high-quality fronts (prefer cheaper foil-covered fronts rather than low-quality laminate fronts)
- Countertop to be affordable but durable (laminate)
- Used cabinet carcasses can be an option if their condition is good
- Reduce extras and accessories in favor of basic equipment
Now I’m wondering how to best approach the installation and assembly of the Metod kitchen to minimize potential errors? Are there common pitfalls in self-assembly that one should know about and avoid?

When installing the Ikea Metod kitchen, keep the following points in mind to avoid common mistakes:
- Check all parts for completeness and any damage before starting the assembly.
- Follow the Ikea assembly instructions exactly, but add your own checks, such as measuring before drilling or screwing.
- Use a spirit level thoroughly— even slight misalignments can lead to unsightly results.
- Screw carefully; wood-based materials cannot withstand over-tightening.
- Allow time for adjustments, for example, when aligning fronts or drawers.
- Have an electrician and plumber check the electrical and water connections only at the end of the installation.
In summary: patience and care are key. If uncertain, it can be helpful to consult an experienced tradesperson for critical steps.

Also, be sure to check the wall—walls are not always perfectly straight. This might mean you need to use shims or make adjustments.
And as a final note: if possible, have a second person help hold and align during the initial phase, as this makes the work much easier.
Great, your tips are extremely helpful, thank you very much! To wrap up my questions:
Does anyone know of affordable but still recommendable alternatives to the classic laminate countertop at Ikea? Something durable that won’t break the budget and is relatively easy to clean?
I’m still uncertain about this and don’t want to cut corners in the wrong place.
