Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of my new IKEA Metod kitchen units and would like to ask for advice on the best way to securely and permanently fix these cabinets to different wall types. Specifically, I am interested in which fixing methods are recommended for load-bearing walls as well as for less stable walls such as drywall or lightweight partition walls.

Additionally, I would like to know the best approach for mixed wall compositions, for example, when working on a wall with plaster over concrete and an internal drywall layer. Which types of anchors and screws are most effective in these cases?

I will be mounting relatively heavy wall cabinets and want to avoid any risk of the furniture pulling out or loosening over time under load. Also, my wall is not always perfectly straight; what should be considered regarding installation in this situation?

Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!

Hello, I can respond to your question as precisely as possible. When mounting IKEA Metod cabinets, the wall type is a crucial factor.

- For solid walls made of concrete or solid brick, I recommend using heavy-duty anchors (e.g., expansion anchors or cavity anchors approved for such loads). You should always use anchors with a minimum diameter of 8 mm (0.3 inches) together with matching screws to securely support the weight of the wall cabinets.
- For drywall or lightweight partition walls, simple anchors are not sufficient. Here, special cavity anchors or metal toggle anchors that spread behind the drywall are required. Even better is direct fastening to the wooden or metal studs behind the drywall, if possible.
- With mixed walls, for example concrete with plaster and drywall, you need to check the thickness of each layer and the load-bearing capacity of the substrate. If there is a solid wall behind a drywall panel, for example, you can often reach the load-bearing core using long anchors and suitable drill bits.

As for the screws, it is advisable to use rust-resistant or galvanized screws that fit the size of the anchors. Also, make sure that the mounting rails for the Metod cabinets are precisely aligned with the wall to avoid stress. For uneven walls, you can use spacer plates or shims to set the rail straight.

What is the exact structure of your wall? And how heavy are the cabinets you want to install?

Thank you for your detailed answer! The wall structure is quite complex: it’s actually a load-bearing concrete wall about 24 cm (9.5 inches) thick, with a plaster layer of around 2 cm (0.8 inches) on top, and on the inside, 12 mm (0.5 inches) drywall panels, since I have a high-insulation partition wall towards the old apartment.

The cabinets themselves weigh about 25-30 kg (55-66 lbs) each, partly with shelves and fronts, which will later be loaded with dishes and glasses. So they will indeed be loaded—under full load, I would expect around 40 kg (88 lbs) or more per cabinet.

Hope this helps with the assessment.

In your wall construction, the concrete wall is definitely the best point for fixing.

Drill deep enough so that your anchors are actually embedded in the concrete and not just holding in the drywall.

For the Metod wall cabinets, I personally use 8 mm (5/16 inch) heavy-duty anchors with matching screws to ensure you have load capacity reserves.

Additionally, use the mounting rail from IKEA, which you fix horizontally with at least three anchors per cabinet – this way the load is distributed optimally.

I can only agree and add the following:

- Especially when installing multiple cabinets, it is advisable to attach a continuous mounting strip along the entire length. This provides stability and makes it easier to align the cabinets horizontally.
- When drilling for anchors, always use a hammer drill and measure the depth precisely to ensure the anchor holds firmly.
- If the wall is uneven, you can place small washers under the mounting strip to achieve exact alignment.

If you are unsure, a spirit level pencil can help mark straight lines.

Great topic, I love the Metod cabinets!

When dealing with lightweight partition walls, it’s really important to choose the right anchors – hollow wall anchors are a must. But if possible, I would always opt to mount on a load-bearing wall. Safety is the most important factor here!

And a heads up: If you have several connected cabinets, make sure to fix them to each other as well – this way they connect better and are more stable overall.

Good luck with the assembly, it’s going to be great!
