Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod wall cabinets and am focusing on how to determine the optimal height for these cabinets. Specifically, I am interested in which factors are crucial when positioning the wall cabinets above the countertop to ensure ergonomic use while also providing enough storage space without overwhelming the room’s atmosphere. Are there any standard measurements or rules of thumb that I can use as guidelines? I have varying heights of the countertops installed below, and I plan to work frequently at the stove and sink in the kitchen, so the optimal height for easy reach is also important to me. I look forward to hearing about any experiences, tips, or recommendations shared here in the forum. Thanks in advance!

Calculate the distance between the countertop and the bottom of the cabinet—ideally 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches)—so you can work comfortably with kitchen utensils and also accommodate larger appliances. This is a crucial point. Additionally, I would recommend considering the height of items like mixing bowls or a microwave inside the cabinets when planning the height, and adjust the cabinet installation accordingly to make them a bit higher.
I always plan my Ikea Metod wall cabinets with a standard countertop depth of 63 cm (25 inches) and a cabinet depth of 37 cm (15 inches). It is important to install the wall cabinets so that the clearance above the countertop is not only enough for headroom but also for specific kitchen accessories. A distance of 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) works well, but if you often use large baking sheets or pots, you can increase the clearance to 65 cm (26 inches).
When assembling, it is also helpful to consider ventilation, especially near the stove or sink, to prevent condensation. Finally, the cabinet height itself (for example, 40 cm or 60 cm [16 or 24 inches]) should be taken into account to maintain overall height and proportions.

Specifically, are there any particular Ikea Metod system components or recommendations from Ikea’s kitchen planning tools that I should consider? For example, I’m wondering whether it makes more sense to choose shallow 40cm (16 inches) high cabinets or rather 60cm (24 inches) high cabinets to optimize both storage space and ergonomics, especially if the spacing can be adjusted depending on the appliance size.
Has anyone also had experience combining wall cabinets with open shelves or lighting solutions for these heights?

whether it makes more sense to choose shallow 40cm (15.7 inches) tall cabinets or rather 60cm (23.6 inches) tall cabinets to optimize both storage space and ergonomicsDepending on the room layout and storage needs, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. 60cm (23.6 inches) wall cabinets offer more storage but can make accessibility harder, especially for shorter individuals. 40cm (15.7 inches) models are more ergonomic but provide less space. A combination could work, for example, 60cm (23.6 inches) wall cabinets above less frequently used areas and 40cm (15.7 inches) cabinets above the main workspace.

experiences with combining wall cabinets and open shelving or lighting solutions for these heights?Open shelves next to or below the wall cabinets can create additional space in a more dynamic way and help make the kitchen feel more open. LED under-cabinet lighting is highly recommended for optimal illumination and improved ergonomics.

Are there specific Ikea Metod system components or recommendations from Ikea itself in their kitchen planner tools that I should consider? Ikea recommends common heights of 40 cm, 60 cm, and 80 cm (16 inches, 24 inches, and 31 inches) for wall cabinets in their Metod kitchen planning. It is important to select cabinets that maintain ergonomics, taking into account the room dimensions and user requirements. Adjustable mounting rails allow for precise, millimeter-accurate (inch-accurate) positioning. Additionally, special corner solutions or extra shelves are useful to utilize storage space efficiently.
