Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen and have chosen the IKEA Metod system because I really appreciate its flexibility. However, instead of closed upper cabinets, I want to create an open shelving solution to achieve a more modern, airy look. My question to the community is: What is the best way to build an IKEA Metod kitchen with open shelving? Specifically, I’m interested in tips on shelf stability, suitable materials, and mounting options to ensure that the open solution not only looks good but is also durable and functional. Additionally, are there any special considerations when planning the base cabinets if the upper cabinets are partially or completely replaced by open shelves? I appreciate any advice!

Hello FRITJOF,

to implement your design with an open shelving solution based on IKEA Metod, there are a few important points to keep in mind.

1. Support planning: Since open shelves are less stable than closed cabinets, I recommend using additional wall brackets or angle supports. IKEA offers sturdy shelves made of solid birch or veneered wood, which are well suited for both decorative and functional purposes.

2. Mounting: Make sure to screw the shelves directly into the wall studs to achieve maximum stability. Drywall alone cannot support much weight.

3. Load capacity and width: Avoid choosing shelves that are too long; it’s better to have several smaller shelves next to each other, as the wider the shelf, the more it will sag.

4. Appearance: Because an open design can attract more dust, a well-thought-out layout and possibly the integration of decorative boxes is advisable.

5. Base cabinets: The planning here changes little; however, the upper cabinets or shelves should be adjusted to the existing ceiling height, for example, so that everything looks harmonious.

If you like, I can gladly create a checklist for you to help with assembly and material selection.

This is the most important aspect to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the open shelves. Additionally, you should consider the weight intended for use.

Furthermore, a reinforced connection between the shelves and the sides of the Metod base cabinets provides extra support. There are special wall shelf brackets and mounting kits available that IKEA does not supply directly but can be supplemented with standard hardware.

In general, you should make an accurate sketch before purchase and check measurements down to a few millimeters (fractions of an inch).

Metod shelves can also be reinforced with additional metal brackets. Always screw into the wall studs and use anchors for drywall. For open shelves, it is better to choose shorter widths.

To add: If you’re using open shelves with the Metod system, you should also consider the load from kitchen appliances or heavy cookbooks. Open solutions are visually appealing, but they require a bit more maintenance since dust is more noticeable.

It might be helpful to equip some shelves or surfaces with anti-slip mats or place glasses and bottles on non-slip pads. Integrating small doors or flap doors in certain areas can also improve functionality while maintaining the open look.

Do you already have a floor plan? How much space do you have available? This significantly influences the design.

Hello FRITJOF,

I would like to build on the previous posts and add a few technical details you should consider:

- Wall structure: It is especially important to know what type of wall you have. Drywall bears little load, while solid brick or concrete is ideal.
- Load distribution: If you have several open shelves, the weight should be distributed evenly to avoid point loads.
- Shelf depth: For kitchens, I recommend a maximum depth of 30 cm (12 inches) for open wall shelves to ensure ergonomic reach.
- Material choice: IKEA offers different finishes and wood types; for open solutions, I often use solid wood for the shelves as it is easier to sand and oil.
- Installation: I suggest using a level set and a good cordless drill; also always choose anchors suitable for your wall type.

Two final questions: Are you planning to hang the shelves on the Metod brackets or mount them separately on the wall? And approximately how much weight do you expect each shelf to hold?
