Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets myself and definitely want to include the soft-close hinges and adjustable shelves. However, I am not entirely sure about the best way to install these, especially the damped hinge systems and the adjustable shelves, which I want to arrange flexibly later on.

I am particularly interested in:
- Are there any specific installation tips for the soft-close hinges that should definitely be followed?
- How do you securely fasten the adjustable shelves while keeping the drill holes as neat and precise as possible?
- Are there common mistakes to avoid to ensure long-term functionality?

I have some experience assembling cabinets, but Metod with these features is new to me. Looking forward to your practical tips and experiences!

Thanks in advance for your help.

For the soft-close hinges, first align the base plate securely on the back panel and carefully fasten everything using the included tool. The hinges themselves can then be easily snapped into place.

For the shelves, I use the original shelf supports from IKEA and position the holes with a spacer to ensure everything stays level.

First of all, it is crucial to accurately determine the exact position of the hinges. Mounting plates for soft-close hinges often differ slightly from the standard versions because they need to accommodate the damper. Make sure the screws are tight, but avoid splitting the material – pre-drilling with a small drill bit can help, especially with particleboard.

When adjusting the door after attaching the hinges, you can precisely fine-tune the depth, height, and lateral position, which is very useful for perfect door alignment.

Regarding shelves: the holes are usually pre-drilled in the factory, but I recommend double-checking with a spirit level and measuring tape before installation to ensure the holes are straight and not misaligned. If the shelves are subjected to heavy loads, reinforcing the holes with small wooden battens may also be advisable.

A common issue is that shelves are installed in a way that allows them to tilt under load. Adding an extra support or a side edge protector can help prevent sagging.

How large are your cabinets, and what type of fronts do you plan to use? Some fronts can also affect the mounting system of the soft-close hinges.

Thank you for the detailed reply! I have mainly planned base cabinets that are 60cm (24 inches) wide and 80cm (31.5 inches) high. The fronts should be matte white and handleless, typically perfectly flat. Do you think this changes anything about the installation, or are the hinges generally compatible? I have also read about different types of hinges but am not exactly sure what they involve and whether that relates to the soft-close function.

Regarding the hinge-compatible fronts: The Metod series primarily uses clip-on hinges that are compatible with most IKEA fronts, including handle-free matte white ones.

Soft-close is usually an additional feature on the hinge, often pre-installed or easy to retrofit.

A few tips:
- Check if special springs are needed for handle-free fronts, as the doors may not close properly without them.
- When attaching the hinges, it is important to pay close attention to the gaps between the cabinet and the front (usually 2-3 cm (1-1.2 inches)) to prevent binding.

That would be great, very helpful! I especially want to avoid having to adjust the doors later or having the shelves come loose. Are there any specific tips I should keep in mind right from the start?
