Hello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind lately: Are there special hinges specifically designed or recommended for the doors of the IKEA Platsa system? In my project for a wardrobe with Platsa components, I noticed that the IKEA doors are built somewhat differently than those of other systems, so I wonder if it’s better to use certain hinges to ensure optimal functionality and durability.
I am particularly interested in whether there are official or unofficial recommendations for specific hinge models that fit better or are easier to install.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Alternatives are usually only used if you want something special like soft-close or stronger hinges, but then you need to pay attention to the dimensions.I think it makes sense to critically examine how "special" the Platsa hinge dimensions really are. How precise are the drill hole markings on the Platsa doors compared to traditional flap hinge doors? Or to put it another way: could standard hinges be installed with minimal adjustments if better functions are desired?
It would be interesting to see comparison values or measurements here to clearly estimate the effort required for conversion.

I’m also wondering whether the extra effort for alternative hinges is worth it when looking for soft-close or higher-quality fittings, or if it’s better to stick strictly to the IKEA solution.
I can clarify this a bit:
- Platsa doors are usually a bit thinner and have a different edge finish compared to standard IKEA doors.
- This means the hinge holes are not always 100% compatible with conventional hinges, especially regarding the cup depth and mounting angles.
- IKEA uses concealed flap hinges with a shallower cup depth on Platsa.
If you want to use alternative hinges, keep the following in mind:
- Check the dimensions of the holes (diameter and spacing) carefully.
- Consider the door thickness, as otherwise the hinges may not sit flush.
- Depending on the hinge type, new holes may need to be drilled, which can weaken the door structure.
My advice: For replacements or additions, use original IKEA hinges and only opt for retrofitting in special cases. This usually saves time and trouble in practice.
One more note: At IKEA, spare parts can usually be ordered individually if you know the exact product number. The item number is often found in the instruction manual or on the packaging.

I just wanted to share my experience: I once had a Platsa door hinge break, and initially, I tried to get a replacement from IKEA. That worked very well; the parts fit perfectly.
For my second project, I experimented with cheaper standard flap hinges and encountered several issues with door alignment, and the doors were difficult to adjust.
This leads me to believe that the special hinges designed for the system are definitely not unnecessary but actually make a difference.
I still think it’s good to check which alternatives are technically possible, but overall, I would recommend using original IKEA parts.

This matches my impression that measuring and adjustments are likely to be time-consuming if you want to use an alternative.
Therefore, it seems reasonable to rely on IKEA replacement parts if no officially compatible alternative is available.
