Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several Ikea Platsa cabinets and am generally satisfied with the system. However, the doors bother me because they slam loudly when closed, as they don’t have a soft-close feature. I’m interested in whether and how it’s possible to retrofit Ikea PLATSA doors with a soft-close mechanism.

I’ve already seen some partial solutions online, such as installing external soft-close hinges or additional dampers, but often these are not specifically designed for PLATSA or only fit partially.

Has anyone here had experience successfully and reliably retrofitting the doors with soft-close? Are there mechanisms that can be directly replaced, or alternatives that work well with standard PLATSA doors?

I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences, tips, or even specific products or modification guides. Thanks!

Your question is understandable, GENAR, since most Ikea flap doors in the PLATSA system really do not come with soft-close features.

What I would be interested to know is: What exactly do you expect from the soft-close? Do you want to dampen the entire closing process or just soften the last few centimeters (inches)? Are you looking for soft-close hinges only, or additional dampers as well?

Basically, the hinge system in PLATSA is not as modular as in, for example, METOD or Pax. Therefore, retrofitting with original soft-close hinges might lead to compatibility issues.

Alternative soft-close dampers that are glued to the outside of the door frame often look less elegant and may come off over time. But have you already tried this, or are you aware of other modification solutions?

Hey GENAR! Great question, I’ve been wondering about that with PLATSA for a while too. 😄

I once tried installing regular soft-close dampers from another brand. It works surprisingly well if you attach them correctly and securely.

If you want, I can share the specific parts I used – they’re affordable and work well! The key is really to install them so that you can clearly feel the door slowing down when it closes.

Don’t worry, it’s easy to improve! Good luck with it! 💪

Soft-close functionality for PLATSA doors is not possible with the original hinges.

You can either replace the hinges with ones that have soft-close features, but this usually requires new drillings at the front.

Alternatively, you can install soft-close dampers separately, for example, at the bottom inside the cabinet.

Sounds like a little puzzle at first! 😅

I’ve heard that using soft-close dampers attached to the cabinet frame can nicely reduce slamming, but visually it looks more like a “temporary DIY fix.” 😄

If you’re handy, you could also try installing small stoppers or rubber buffers inside as a gentle solution.

But honestly, nothing beats the perfect soft-close hinge – if only Ikea would release a suitable system for PLATSA! 🎯

I can totally understand how annoying the slamming can be, especially when you use the furniture frequently in daily life.

I had the same issue with one of my PLATSA shelves. I ended up buying soft-close dampers from a third-party supplier and installed them inside the cabinet. This made the noise much more pleasant, and you don’t have to close the doors so carefully anymore.

I also agree that the installation isn’t very elegant, but for me, the effort was worth it. If you’d like, I can describe exactly where I attached the dampers.
